Yeah, Abdullah/Dollar Brand has a lot of stunning records you can still pick up pretty cheap on vinyl. Great that he's still out there, doing it....

I like the Dollar Brand record "Black Thunder" which has thunder and karate sound effects and someone echoing "Black Thunder!" A surprising pop touch for the pianist...

Terri-Lyne won the Grammy for best instrumental jazz record for her Money Jungle tribute. Big fan of the original, first Ellington record I owned...

Yeah, I got a deep thing for Caetano, and his records over the last 20 years have all been particular faves of mine.

Funny that "Caetano" is a one-name superstar throughout much of the world but remains a cult figure here....

It seems that much of the rest of the world is more appreciative of jazz than the US

Most modern players make a living combining teaching and European tours. Yet such a wealth of talent right under our feet! Thank goodness for European television or we'd have almost no footage of Coltrane an so many other legends of the music...

I think it is weird that sometime around the late 80s, instrumentals stopped appearing on the pop charts. Has the ability to listen to instrumental music withered in this country?

Yeah, Dolphy another big fave with me. Just this week I picked up that recent Resonance collection of MUSIC MATADOR and IRON MAN, although I already have the vinyl....

John Dennis on now, forgotten Philly pianist they called "The Fat Genius of Philly Piano." Made just one record, a trio one with Mingus and Max Roach.

Dolphy just really. really got the flute IMO.

Yeah, I see Nicole Mitchell as a modern player rooted in Dolphy's flute ideas....

I lived in the Fillmore (moistly) from 1991 - 1999. Great place to be young....

I did a whole "S.F. in the '90s" show for Laborwave, which was a blast to put together....

Yeah, I felt like I could find any new record being released at one of a dozen Bay area stores I kept under strict surveillance....

Zipping through some crazy tuns here, from Ecuador, Israel and the U.K....

I found stuff like "Teachers in Space" and "Jodie Fosters Army"... LOL Where else can anyone fine that stuff?!? I really miss that.

Apparently the Captain was a bit of a tyrannical Band Leader.But a great late night TV guest.

The Balancing Act did a great cover of Zig Zag Warrior. Another little known Cali band.

I don't think that the Capt's music could be achieved by being easy-going...
