Happy Valentine's Day!
Brian D 12:04:59 PM
Hello Dan
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:05:50 PM
Hey Brian!
Patrick White (1) 12:05:57 PM
Great opener DAn.Happy Valentine's Day everybody.I believe Ella' was Frank Sinatra s favorite singer.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:10:59 PM
She's a pip! Hey Patrick!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:11:33 PM
Did you watch Dorothy Arzner films all last night like me?
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:12:34 PM
Some Halvorson freak-out here...
Patrick White (1) 12:13:13 PM
I watched the Super Bowl for the 55th straight year but somehow missing the Dorothy Arzner festival leaves a void in my life.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:13:38 PM
Better gowns.
Christine 🦉 12:14:17 PM
That was a lil' freak-out indeed.
Patrick White (1) 12:14:18 PM
Every year I hope that the half time show features the Sun Ra.Arkestra.emceed by Dan Buskirk.
Christine 🦉 12:14:34 PM
Happy V Day, Dan & everybody!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:15:13 PM
"The NFL Salutes Afro-Futurism!"
Patrick White (1) 12:16:09 PM
Yeah it would be great to watch Corporate America heads explode!!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:16:38 PM
Hey Christine! ❤️
Dan Ruccia (1) 12:23:55 PM
Hey Dan! Looks like I need to track down that Triple Double album...
Christine 🦉 12:25:53 PM
I would watch the Superbowl if the Sun Ra Arkestra rocked the halftime show (which would cause corporate heads to explode).
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:27:34 PM
Yeah Dan, it's a winner. I was playing the long drum workout in my car while parked at a light and ended up having a brief conversation about Africa with the guy parked next to me. Got in a plug for the station too, before the light changed....
Patrick White (1) 12:27:40 PM
Dan's program nice sountrack for Winter Olympics
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:27:56 PM
That looonng light on Nassau....
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:28:23 PM
I program with curling in mind....
Patrick White (1) 12:28:45 PM
I miss barrel jumping.
mark 12:29:06 PM
haha curling 🥌 is my favorite event :)
uno clay 12:29:24 PM
this show has ruled so far
Patrick White (1) 12:30:00 PM
Winter Olympics have been all downhill since Jean Claude Killy retired.
Christine 🦉 12:30:39 PM
@Mark, so cool that there's a curling emoji!
mark 12:31:34 PM
jean claude an Olympic all-timer ! yes christine surprised it showed up !
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:33:07 PM
Ingebrigt Håker Flaten of The Thing!
mark 12:35:27 PM
Dan i see there’s a film seminar featuring a dorothy arzner film :)
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:36:45 PM
Yes! Very excited for the next Fleisher class, we'll be showing Arzner's DANCE GIRL DANCE with Maureen O'Hara and Lucille Ball.....
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:37:35 PM
Ida Lupino's OUTRAGE! Mervyn LeRoy's THEY WON'T FORGET! Sidney Poitier's BUCK & THE PREACHER...
mark 12:37:59 PM
I just read up on that one & her life - incredible woman
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:38:39 PM
Watched 4 of her films yesterday, she really had her own thing going on...
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:40:31 PM
Arzner's WORKING GIRLS from 1930 is now a favorite, great story about sister, 19 and 20, who move to NYC and try to carve out a life for themselves...
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:43:58 PM
Some more groovy sounds from the U.K. (Bristol) Claude Cooper...
Patrick White (1) 12:44:16 PM
Just watched My Sister Eileen the other day Similar story line.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:45:32 PM
Which version!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:46:37 PM
Rosalind Russell and Janet Blair or Janet Leigh and Betty Garrett?
Patrick White (1) 12:46:39 PM
The one with Rosalind Russell.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:47:04 PM
Ah! Great film. I have them together on a laserdisc set!
Christine 🦉 12:47:30 PM
I'm unfamiliar with Dorothy Arzner; just looked her up. So many films!
Patrick White (1) 12:48:02 PM
Cameos by Larry and Curly
mark 12:50:10 PM
christine it seems Dan could do a whole class on dorthy arzner what a pioneer
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:51:44 PM
Yes! Arzner was very successful commercially but the rumors are Louis B Mayer was a homophobe and kinda crushed her career. As she dressed very butch in her day her characters often remake their fate but their wardrobes. Lots of great comraderie between her women characters as well. Fascinating, distinctive films.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:52:14 PM
"by their wardrobes"
Brian D 12:52:45 PM
I hear Eric made a mean barbecue
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:54:11 PM
All four of the director could have whole programs dedicated to them. Mervyn LeRoy, as the sole producer, the real creative mind behind WIZARD OF OZ, has been a real revelation. He made 34 films in the 1930s alone, and taken together, it makes for a rich and revealing document of the era....
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:54:57 PM
Yeah, I guess the Dolphy estate probably owes Zappa for the exposure...
Marcus Watt 12:55:14 PM
I'm a big Dolphy fan. Also, I have a few cassettes of Dan hosting Beat Planet from about 30 years ago. I still play them occasionally.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:55:28 PM
Cool to hear these three "17 West"s together....
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:56:13 PM
Hey Marcus, that's crazy! Would love to hear them, if you ever get around to digitizing them....
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:00:43 PM
OUT THERE was the pinnacle in my early Dolphy obsession...
mark 1:02:49 PM
could spend the rest of the day reading those four bios never realized lupino made the bad seed
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:03:41 PM
LeRoy made THE BAD SEED, and GYPSY!
mark 1:03:41 PM
Correction: LeRoy
Marcus Watt 1:04:20 PM
Dan, why don't I just mail you one. PO Box 388 at the station?
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:05:54 PM
His 30s stuff for Warners is so distinctive, later he became a making of highly-produced A-Films, but always with a surprising intelligence, a interest in the lives of women and first-rate performances. He claims he never made a film that lost money. Not sue that's true, but he doesn't have any big budget bombs in his filmpgraphy...
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:07:02 PM
Would you mind sending me an email and I'll give you an address, off-chat,,,dbuskirk1@hotmail.com
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:08:42 PM
This version of "Round Midnight" with Dolphy was another early obsession in my jazz listening...
Patrick White (1) 1:09:19 PM
Wish I saved my Dan Buskirk cassettes.I used to listen First hour in my car then record on my boombox.Go back to work.Sneak out flip the tape.
mark 1:11:44 PM
@patrick those cassettes would be priceless! what happened to them ?!
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:13:22 PM
Ha! That's great Patrick!
Patrick White (1) 1:14:56 PM
Just like my Mom threw out my baseball cards I did the same with my tapes...darned digital revolution. My Worried Waltz tapes would be a collectors item.
mark 1:15:55 PM
hope she didn’t throw out your honus wagner card ! :)
Patrick White (1) 1:16:36 PM
Dan my last place to buy blank cassette tapes was the Vietnamese couple that run the curio store in 9th street market. At that point the only people using cassettes were myself and AL Queda.
mark 1:17:05 PM
tho from what i hear the prb tapes may be more valuable
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:18:13 PM
I think I was going to the same 9th Street market store. Last place I could find anything but the dictation quality....
Patrick White (1) 1:18:30 PM
Homeland Security actually investigated me thought I was a sleeper cell.
Patrick White (1) 1:19:25 PM
That couple has been there since Saigon fell and they came here Very nice people
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:19:36 PM
I get the same feeling buying CD-Rs today
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:20:06 PM
Yeah, she was always very pleasant.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:21:29 PM
I loved sking for oddball items that they'd fish out of their store. "Do you have an oyster knife?" "A wheel eraser with the brush on the end?" "Road salt?" They always seemed to find it somewhere in that little store...
Patrick White (1) 1:22:56 PM
Yeah a chaotic assortment but they would have what you were looking for. They never gouged people either.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:23:36 PM
Always a bargain!
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:23:57 PM
Dirty Dozen do Marvin!
Patrick White (1) 1:25:28 PM

They had a few Ramones also.
mark 2:16:10 PM
band peaked at “fear of music” imho
Patrick White (1) 2:16:38 PM
I took a friend from work.He knew nothing about this kind of music. He was so smitten He became the lead singer for the seminal local band YDI..
Brian D 2:18:17 PM
Just finished the Chris Frantz book. It really was a bit too much of a book about buildings and food no kidding. And complaining about David. And mentioning that he went to RISD. And lots of describing food & hotels on tour. Some rock star gossip rumors too. I wanted more geeky musical talk of rhythms, time signatures, gadgets, music overall
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:19:23 PM
I go to SPEAKING IN TONGUES but was just thinking how much I don't like everything past that....
Brian D 2:19:57 PM

Patrick White (1) 2:34:23 PM

Dan Buskirk (host) 2:47:27 PM
Bet that was great, both bands still pretty captivating in their later years....
Patrick White (1) 2:48:33 PM
Yeah Arthur had a bunch of young guys but he drilled them well.
Marcus Watt 2:49:42 PM
I saw Arthur about two years before he died. The Troc. He was great.
