Hello! It's a surprise for me as well to be heard this morning.
kentman 7:07:09 AM
good morning DTO
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 7:07:52 AM
Hello, kentman.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 7:31:55 AM
So, kentman, I hear you like Richard Pinhas.
kentman 7:39:58 AM
back in the 70's I heard Greenland on XON not knowing his history and had to have that album
kentman 7:40:30 AM
XPN, excuse me
kentman 7:43:19 AM
or was it the 80's,
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 7:45:01 AM
Yeah, much of my musical knowledge and tastes are a result of XPN in the 70's and 80's.
kentman 7:47:24 AM
they used to play Heldon a lot
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 7:49:16 AM
I can't imagine them playing Heldon these days.
kentman 7:53:08 AM
I'm not clear on what happened to them, did the U of P give up on the station and sell it?
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:01:14 AM
No, they got taken over by some smart marketers wearing suits. The realized that playing mainstream music increases their fundraising power. Can't argue with the bottom line.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:03:58 AM
Wikipedia has an article about it.
kentman 8:05:25 AM
I regret not supporting them financially back in the day, but I never had any money then
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:06:16 AM
I think that was their whole point. The fringe music they played appealed to the un- and under-employed.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:07:44 AM
The takeover was quite dramatic. The Sleepy Hollow DJs objected to the imposed restrictions on what music they could play and protested by staging a live on-air walkout.
kentman 8:11:29 AM
I missed all that.. by the early 90's I was listening to PRB at night and still working in the day
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:13:51 AM
I am so grateful that WPRB has managed to maintain its freeform format. Overall, I think WPRB is better now that XPN ever was.
kentman 8:14:33 AM
definitely
kentman 8:17:44 AM
do you remember when they almost lost their license over a show?
Chef Emeril Lagasse 🍳 8:17:55 AM
BAM and good morning to all! Lovely selections this morning
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:18:06 AM
Good morning, Chef!
Chef Emeril Lagasse 🍳 8:19:43 AM
I'm grateful for WPRBs format too! Which is why everyone should visit wprb.com/donate !
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:19:58 AM
@kentman, I was not aware of the first time that happened. But I recall one episode of The Experimental Radio Project, where they had some live call-ins which got into troubling territory.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:21:01 AM
Thanks, Chef. Out spring Membership Drive starts on Wednesday April 20th. Can't wait to receive my new Chef T-Shirt!
kentman 8:22:09 AM
I'm a monthly donor, so I don't sweat the fund drives like I used to
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:22:38 AM
Same.
Chef Emeril Lagasse 🍳 8:23:55 AM
Very excited about the chef shirt! 👨‍🍳♥️👕
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:24:35 AM
It's one of the best.
Chef Emeril Lagasse 🍳 8:24:43 AM
And totally, last year's spring drive was when I finally made the jump to becoming a monthly donor, it was so fun
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:25:40 AM
If I recall correctly, you also made multiple individual donations during, like, EVERY show.
kentman 8:31:34 AM
have to check the Muffins out, they're new to me, by the way what's cooking Chef, I haven't had breakfast yet
TAndy 8:35:36 AM
Woah what the hell I missed the first half!! Good morning everyone
TAndy 8:36:25 AM
Ooh aah it's a rerun
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:36:31 AM
Good day, TAndy. This is a rebroadcast, and you heard all this 2 days ago.
TAndy 8:38:04 AM
Good morning Dave from the Past
kentman 8:38:29 AM
usually chats are closed but DTO graciously opened it up
TAndy 8:38:51 AM
Eckskellent
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:39:31 AM
Sure! I was listening anyway, and was surprised to hear myself early this morning.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:40:45 AM
I really like Good Mental's show. I get to hear a lot of Chinese music that I ordinarily wouldn't hear.
kentman 8:41:13 AM
morning TAndy, you were on a roll last night with Tim, lots of good talk, was going to chime in but was too tired
TAndy 8:42:13 AM
Good morning kentman!
TAndy 8:42:50 AM
His show definitely had me thinking but then I got locked in to the groove of the music and I have to shut up so I could enjoy
kentman 8:44:25 AM
I wonder some times when the chat is buzzing away, is anybody listening to the music
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:47:14 AM
I wonder how DJ Esoterica keeps up. I've seen her chat where the posts are so fast, it's like a Twitch feed. Comments streaming faster than I can read.
DSM 8:51:53 AM
Wow, I knew within 3 seconds of turning the radio on that DTO must be here this morning! Nice surprise!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:52:28 AM
Hey, DSM! It's a rebroadcast.
Chef Emeril Lagasse 🍳 8:53:08 AM
@dave yes lol, many of those individual donations were quite small in order to motivate other listeners towards reaching a goal and to hear the constant absurdity of me, Chef Emeril Lagasse, donating yet again
TAndy 8:53:56 AM
Hey DSM and Chef!
Chef Emeril Lagasse 🍳 8:53:58 AM
@kentman this morning we've got broccoli flavored pancakes with three types of hot sauce and four types of shrimp! :)
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:53:59 AM
Well, Chef, it seems that strategy worked!
DSM 8:54:39 AM
I do remember this one from Friday, still glad to hear ya!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:57:26 AM
I'm sad to have to miss Rosasolis Dream's show - I'm out cold by that time.
Chef Emeril Lagasse 🍳 8:57:38 AM
@Dave AND of course to flood the best radio station in the world with CASH
kentman 8:58:17 AM
sounds like a feast Chef
TAndy 8:58:20 AM
My message seems to be in approval limbo
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:59:04 AM
I might have accidentally unchecked a box in the chat - should be rectified now.
TAndy 8:59:04 AM
DTO I miss her old time slot 😭 the prog hour for the first third js always so fun
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:59:38 AM
For sure, she has introduced me to quite a lot of great music.
kentman 8:59:55 AM
I love her voice
DSM 9:00:48 AM
Hey TAndny, good morning. I was in message limbo as well.
DSM 9:01:36 AM
the old 3rd hour of From The Notebook was stuff I would have never even given a chance on my own, then I grew to crave and love it
TAndy 9:01:37 AM
Same kentman. I am personally a huge fan of the vaporwave/adjecent and hardcore stuff though
TAndy 9:04:20 AM
>:)
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:05:29 AM
That the magic of WPRB - not knowing about whole fields of music, and learning to love them all.
TAndy 9:10:04 AM
I'll say. Of all the playlists I have that contain music I like from each DJs show I listen to... Ameena, Anika, CJ, and your playlists I have saved have the most music.
Addie Plum 🐍 9:17:18 AM
Good morning folks!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:17:36 AM
Good morning, Addie Plum!
Addie Plum 🐍 9:18:17 AM
Glad you’re on, I don’t usually get to listen to your shows!
DSM 9:19:07 AM
I tried wprb last night after 1am and just got silence, TAndy did you hear anything? I did flip over to xpn and was surprised there was a really good spacey/new age show going, Star's End. First time I'd heard it. Similar to Mike Hunter's show
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:19:09 AM
I know, my Friday 7-10 timeslot is not convenient for anybody.
DSM 9:19:42 AM
Hey Addie!
Addie Plum 🐍 9:19:54 AM
Mornin’ DSM!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:20:26 AM
@DSM, Star's End is fantastic. It was the inspiration for Mike Hunter. (It's also about the only XPN show left undisturbed by their format change.)
Addie Plum 🐍 9:20:46 AM
Agree, stars end is fantastic!
Addie Plum 🐍 9:21:35 AM
Used to listen to it while sleeping. Made for some strange experiences
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:21:45 AM
Same.
DSM 9:22:44 AM
Interesting! I'll have to try leaving it on next week while in zzz land
Addie Plum 🐍 9:22:47 AM
One time I absolutely thought the final trumpets were sounding.
DSM 9:23:08 AM
lol
Addie Plum 🐍 9:23:34 AM
Pretty weird way to wake up!
kentman 9:23:59 AM
then followed by Sleepy Hollow, brings back memories, I used to live for saturday night into sunday morning on XPN
Addie Plum 🐍 9:24:20 AM
Yes, kentman! Me too!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:24:55 AM
Yeah. Sleepy Hollow still exists there, but in name only.
kentman 9:25:21 AM
morning Addie
Addie Plum 🐍 9:25:21 AM
Aw, bummer to hear that.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:26:10 AM
It's just more of the same "singrrr / songwritrrr" stuff, just slightly more mellow.
Andy Wing 9:27:29 AM
Just catching the repeat, Ashley!
Andy Wing 9:27:50 AM
Been listening to Stars End since 1980.
Addie Plum 🐍 9:28:28 AM

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star%27s_End
kentman 9:32:24 AM
I heard the title track to this Laraaji album on Srar's end
TAndy 9:33:42 AM
@DSM music started around 20 after, Bani was having some technical issues starting her show. The selection was phenomenal though, it was like a late afternoon dose of Dubya PRB in the dead of night
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:34:33 AM
I opted for the shorter, less spacy track. I'd love to air more ambient music, but the morning timeslot is not the best for that.
TAndy 9:36:51 AM
I also did not know of that Star's End program, I'll have to listen to that at some point.
kentman 9:39:32 AM
the dj Chuck Van Zyl is a musician himself and quite good
Andy Wing 9:39:50 AM
I have a collection of around 500 Stars Ends on mp3. I used to time shift it every weekend until Chuck started using the stations programming server around 2005(?)
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:40:07 AM
Indeed. I own several of Chuck Van Zyl's CDs.
Andy Wing 9:40:46 AM
He made a number of cassettes early on as Xyl or Xisle.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:41:44 AM
I used to tape Stars' End on an old 6 hour VHS tape, to time shift later each week.
Andy Wing 9:44:00 AM
I actually transcribed all of my VHS to mp3, then donated them. Probably 5 boxes of them overall.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:44:53 AM
That sounds like a lot of work, Andy.
Andy Wing 9:45:55 AM
It was! I had a VCR going every day for about four months. Never realized how many tapes I had accumulated from 1990 - 2004.
DSM 9:47:49 AM
