5:00 PM		Chromelodeon Polygon Sun The Final Recordings 2007 8-piece epic chip-tune metal from Philadelphia who performed rock covers of classic NES/SEGA 8-bit soundtracks using a combination of synthesizers and traditional instruments from guitars to accordions and had audience members play the games that corresponded to each soundtrack song live on a projection behind the musicians on stage. Currently, many members of this band are in the band Cheap Dinosaurs.

@Dennis - You can tell Mary I used to frequent that 21st & Sansom original location of Tampopo back in my 20s. I lived in a lil studio on 16th & Spruce from the late 90s through the mid-2000s and it was one of my go-to’s! 🍣

@Addie - Srsly! I am so sad my shore plans conflict with the rescheduled TMBG Flood anniversary show in June. I’ve had tickets since 2020. I might have to just make the drive from Long Beach Island to Philly and back in the same night for that show!

@Rofflestomp - I spent childhood summers swimming in the cedar lakes of the Pine Barrens, esp at Camp Matollionequay. Loved canoeing there. Didn’t love the occasional leeches I saw clinging to the dock’s wooden steps!

@Roffle - I was one of those Jersey kids who always crashed at OTHER people’s shore houses because we couldn’t begin to afford our own, BUT so many people I knew did- friends, cousins, et.al. There was ALWAYS someone down the shore I could stay with at any given time, even if it was to just sleep in a hallway, which it usually was

@Liz did you ever go to an abandoned mental institution somewhere in the pine barrens (I think)? I remember kayaking and a ton of people were there.

Same here Liz, My friends had those LBI places for sure. We would bring the fire wood with us.

@Dennis - Whoa! No! I probably would have had I known! I explored Byberry abandoned mental institution in NE Philly/Bucks with my friends in my 20s on more than more occasion and took some creepy photos there! There was some kind of [probably toxic] fungus growing out of a wall of pharmaceutical drawers pulled out at various angles - it looked cool, so damn our lungs!

Spent lots of time off season. loved it.

@lizbot I’d say the drive would be worth it!!

@Roffle - The super frustrating thing is: My mom’s dad actually bought two undeveloped lots in LBI way back in the 30s when it was dirt cheap, lots of the island was just wild with occasional cedar sharks fishing shacks, and he could’ve held on top them, but he sold them in the early 60s just before things really took off there!

@addie - I should do it, yeah!

@Lizbot, yesterday I was telling someone about the catbird that hates you.

@Lizbot - So true! Everyone bought up those properties for a few coins back then.

@Roffle - I love to go there off-season. I love beach walking when it isn’t crowded!

Off season and a jacket on the beach alone is priceless!

@Rob - haha! That catbird is BACK in spades! It is filled with rage! It believes my deck rightfully belongs to it and it will not be reasoned with

@Roffle - For real! Even in June it’s too early to swim yet - water still a bit too chilly, and I feel I’m not a cold water wuss so I still will go in if it’s low-tide - but it’s so much more relaxed there then!

@rofflestomp I love going to Asbury park in the off-season to hang out at silverball.

@Roffle - My mom’s Uncle Harrington lived in one of those cedar fisherman huts in LBI and fished every chance he got. He owned a “yum-yum” shop (water-ice mixed with cream) and my mom worked there in the summers as a teen in the 50s! Honestly, yum-yum aren’t as good as gelati soft-serve with water-ice

@Lizbot, there were a couple of catbirds in my neighborhood on my afternoon walk that dgaf when I walked by. One of them was across the street at a neighbor's bird feeders.

@LIZ - Gosh! AWESOME! Just to live a bit of the dream and get to hang there! That's so cool!

@Rob - they are BOLD. My friend who has a lot of feeders in her yard loves them because she says they are very polite and always wait their turn at the feeder! Ha! Not in my experience! She also likes that they eat the grape jelly and oranges she puts out. 🍊 🐦

@Roffle - I never met Uncle Harrington but I heard many stories about him. He was a character, apparently!

@rob - mAybe the catbirds are intimidated by other birds at the feeder, but certainly not by us humans!

@Ossy - Did you catch the 8-bit chip-tune epic I played at the top of the show today? Made me think of your gaming adventures!

Yeah! Heard many arcadic gaming stuff, like from DJ Milky Way!

@Rofflestomp - My favorite uncle worked for a toy company out in Spokane in the 80s and used to send me care packages of free toys! Pretty sweet! Before that he worked for proctor and gamble and sent stuff like boxes of cake mix and other random P&G products.

@Ossy - I started off at 5 with Philly’s own Chromelodeon, which plays both 8-bit original compositions inspired by old NES & SEGA games and also covers songs from those games’ soundtracks, like Ninja Gaiden, etc.

@Lizbot - Uncles are best!

@Ossy - I loved seeing them live in the early to mid 2000s Then they broke up and reformed as Cheap Dinosaurs, which is similar and also good, but Chromolodeon had a great reunion show at PhilaMOCA a few years back that was one of my favorite shows there.

@Rofflestomp - They are awesomely avuncular!

My moms brother worked for Colgate, but I don't remember lots of free toothpastes.

@Ossy - and ALSO, (I think you’d like this,) they used to let audience members play those original NES & SEGA games and they’d project the game on a screen behind them on stage!

@Roffle - Kind of the opposite of a toothpaste co, my mom’s dad worked at Sealtest Ice Cream in the 40s & 50s and brought home huge tubs of leftover ice cream, so all the neighborhood kids came over after school and shared them with my mom and her brother before they melted cuz they were way too big to fit in their freezer! 🍦

I got into chip tunes looking for Animal Collective. I was searching for them and stumbled onto 8-bit collective, a site where anyone could submit chiptunes. There was a lot of cool stuff on that site.

@Dennis - Nice! There’s also a good project called 8-Bit Operators I’ve played on ++good before where various chiptune artists cover the music of Kraftwerk 🤖

@Roffle - 😆 My mom’s childhood stories sound like some scene out of the movie Avalon, but Jersey-ified. She had another uncle who worked in the factory of RCA Victor in Camden and back then they have employees discounted TVs so her house was the first on the block to have a TV, which, along with the free ice cream, made her very popular in the neighborhood for a while!

Ninja Gaiden is a boss game, never finished it though, due to stopping for others and daily activities. There's a fan game crossover the 1985 Super Mario Bros game with chars like Link, Mega Man, Pit the Angel, Ryu(Ninja Gaiden), Bill from Contra, Samus and Simon Belmont!

I had a later pressing of the record. No moving parts!

@Ossy - yeah, that was fun! And their later incarnation, as the band Cheap Dinosaurs, is great too, but a little less directly influenced by those 80s game soundtracks

I loved Mario and Super Mario 2 back in the day but somehow never played Mega Man until I got it on an emulator in the early 2000s and it was so much fun and had a great soundtrack! I don’t know how I never rented that one from the local video/game rental place as a kid!

Hi Mary! Great Tampopo show! Imight’ve seen yr librarian friend at that 21st & Sansom original Tampopo location since I ate there frequently back in the early 2000s!

You may have even seen me! I’m so glad you liked the show!

In the middle school to early college days, I was on the 1st Mega Man game and on post final week, I defeated Dr. Wily and his army, and was a kickoff to summer!! Super Mario Bros 2, played that occasionally, never got too too far. I usually play that annually on Ash Wednesdays, because I was playing SM2 in the middle school before church and since made that a "tradition" lol.

@Mary - Haha, probably. I lived in an studio not far from there at the time. I loved their tofu teriyaki bento box with egg cakes and green tea ice cream for dessert! 🍨

Liz - The Mario Crossover game is internet based I believe, its literally playing the original Mario Bros, but with crossover characters and their abilities! Another iconic flash game is Super Smash Flash 1 and 2, which are based on the Smash Bros series!

@liz ster8o-bit? That’s the best I can think of, there’s a slew of internet radio sites called stereoBIT and some albums, but they don’t seem groop-influenced.

@Rofflestomp - It’s true! God, I used to rent French New Wave and Italian neo-realist movies for free from the main Phila Public Library branch on 19th & Vine all the time in my early 20s. I served food with Food Not Bombs in the park just across from that branch every Sunday. Now libraries don’t even have Saturday hours! It really bums my kid out too

Very exciting Liz, Super Princess Peach came out around 2005 and she has more super powers of emotions into elements like rage fire, sadness water, joy wind and calm healing(though not element based) and has a talking umbrella that can make her eat enemies lol

Rundgren went there, and yet no one even does, I don't get that at all if you look at his work.

@Mary - The Kids Are Alright is my favorite music doc. I’ll always be nostalgic about it because I had a pretty intense Who phase in middle school and watched that doc an embarrassing number of times (minimum once a week!) my parents thought I was nuts for watching it so much so I started only watching it when they were out!

@Addie / Alan / Dennis - the craziest time I saw Natalie (Weyes Blood) perform was at a mid 2000s Halloween show at a friend’s house where she sang black metal screamy vocals wirh my husband’s housemate’s band, Satanized! I also saw her perform on top of a bus!
