7:09 AM		Tortilla Flat Tortilla Flat für ein ¾ Stündchen s/r 1974 The German band Tortilla Flat, named after the John Steinbeck novel, released their only record "für ein ¾ Stündchen" as a private pressing in 1974. Apart from the musical influence the band showed also some typical Canterbury tongue in cheek humor with the title "für ein ¾ Stündchen" (for a 3/4 hour), pointing in a humorous way to the average length of a vinyl record.
7:19 AM		Moving Gelatine Plates Astromonster The World Of Genius Hans Replica Records 1972 Formed in Sartrouville, France, in 1968, disbanded in 1972. Their music was distinctly apolitical, filled with a sense of humor and an irreverence that distinguished them from many of their more brooding contemporaries.
7:25 AM		Ocarinah Premiere Vision De L’Etrange Premiere Vision De L’Etrange Calypsia 1978 Ocarinah is instrumental progressive rock from Oyonnax, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France, formed in the mid 1970's. One LP.
7:37 AM		Set Break: over “Infernal regions” by Bill Nelson Canterbury from Japan in this next set.
7:40 AM		Stubbs First Meeting The Idyll Party 1984 The Japanese band "Stubbs" (apparently naming themselves after 'The Stubbs Effect' by Hatfield and The North), was creating music in the Canterbury scene vein during the late 80's over a couple of albums which didn't get much circulation. You'll hear watered down National Health & Hatfield and The North here. The drumming is particularly weak
7:49 AM		moleslope Changing SLOPE Dewfall Records 2019 Although describing their influences as post rock and minimal music, this Tokyo based group also wears its Canterbury influences on its sleeves, with their name "Moleslope" coming from the combination of Matching Mole and 'slope', for the slopes of Canterbury region in England.
7:53 AM		De Lorians Toumai De Lorians Beyond Beyond Is Beyond Records 2019 Expert at copying the early Canterbury sound, complete with fuzz organ, De Lorians sound just like lost tracks by an early Soft Machine, with infusions of Zappa.

8:06 AM		Picchio dal Pozzo Cocomelastico Picchio Dal Pozzo Black Beard Records 1976 Picchio dal Pozzo are considered to be one of the very few "Canterbury" inspired bands that emerged from Italy's fertile 1970's progressive rock (RPI) musical scene.
8:10 AM		Picchio dal Pozzo Mederno ballabile (Richiesta con Dedica) Abbiamo tutti i suoi problemi Marquee Inc. 2010 Their second release "Abbiamo tutti i suoi problemi" seems to have been influenced by Henry Cow's "Western Culture", RIO's 'Stormy Six' from Italy, and Frank Zappa's jazz compositions. Combining these influences (along with Italian prog rock), the music is complex in a RIO style, yet accessible.
8:20 AM		Dedalus Conn Dedalus Trident, Italy 1973 Dedalus was founded in Pinerolo Italy in 1973, disbanded in 1979. The eponymous first LP was their most Soft Machine-like album, featuring some particularly spacey experimentation.
8:23 AM		Homunculus Res Culturismo Ballo Organizzare Limiti All'Eguaglianza Della Parte Con Il Tutto AltrOck 2013 Founded in Palermo in 2013, they were inspired by Picchio dal Pozzo, but they have also drawn from the rich RPI tradition.

8:34 AM		Set Break: over “Lobster in Cleavage Probe” by Hatfield and The North Canterbury from Holland (the Netherlands, Dutchland whatever)
8:38 AM		Supersister She Was Naked She Was Naked - Single Red Bullet 1970 Founded in 1967 in The Hague, Netherlands. Active 1970-1975. Considered the Dutch 'Caravan'.
8:41 AM		Supersister 11_8 Present from Nancy Red Bullet 1970 "Present From Nancy" was their debut-album featuring lots of flute and distorted organ and a vocalist who sounds quite a bit like Richard Sinclair.
8:45 AM		Pantheon Daybreak Orion Philips / Vertigo 1972 Founded in The Hague, Netherlands in 1971. Symphonic rock group with jazzy influences from Arnhem. Panthéon made music from 1971 -1974.
8:47 AM		Pantheon Apocalyps Orion Philips / Vertigo 1972 They released this one LP in 1972.
8:58 AM		Set Break: over “Standing Stones” by Jade Warrior Canterbury from Belgium. 🕳🐇 More to explore at these sites: ProgArchives on Canterbury Calyx site by Aymeric Leroy
9:04 AM		Arkham Upstairs In The Granary Arkham Sub rosa 2021 'Arkham' is an early 70's Belgian prog band that featured keyboard player Jean-Luc Manderlier who would later join Magma, drummer Daniel Denis who would also move on to Magma as well as Univers Zero, and drummer Patrick Cogneaux. During this early stage, recorded between 1970-72, they exhibited influences by Soft Machine and Egg. These old recordings were first released in 1994.
9:09 AM		Cos Postaeolian Train Robbery Postaeolian Train Robbery Musea 1974 This band's career spans over five albums released between 1974 and 1984. Often referred to as the Belgian answer to Zao, they offer a mixture of prog rock, jazz and Canterbury styles, drawing their influences mainly from Magma, King Crimson, Hatfield and The North and of course, Zao. One of the premier groups from Belgium. This is their debut LP.
9:13 AM		Cos L'idiot Leon Viva boma Musea 1976 "Viva Boma" is their 2nd release, with a goofy edge (in a different but similar slant than the Dutch group Supersister). Cos is led by flautist/guitarist Daniel Schell and feature the unique vocals of his wife, Pascale Son, who uses nonsense syllables to suggest a semblance of language (not unlike Magma).
9:24 AM		Pazop M.M.M. Psychillis of a Lunatic Genius Musea 1996 Active between 1971-1974 (without releasing any record during its existence). Besides Canterbury, Pazop was heavily influenced by Zappa and modern classical composers.
9:30 AM		Set Break: over “Shen Nong's Miracle Herbs” by Dirk “Mont” Campbell, from “Music From A Round Tower” Canterbury from the USA in this next set. (Sorry, couldn't fit in anything by The Muffins.)
9:33 AM		Volaré Abcircus The Uncertainty Principle The Laser's Edge 1997 Formed in Athens Georgia in 1994, active until 1997. Not far from Canterbury groups like Hatfield and The North, but retaining their own voice. (Band named after the car "Volaré".)
9:40 AM		Master Cylinder Plus 3 Elsewhere Inner City 1981 Formed in Fort Worth in 1981, and released just one LP. On the jazzier side of Canterbury.
9:50 AM		A Triggering Myth The Eisenhour Slumber The Remedy of Abstraction The Laser's Edge 2006 The band was formed in 1989 by Rick Eddy and Tim Drumheller, an American duo of multi-instrumentalists who handle keyboards, guitars, percussions, flute and trumpet, although they regularly enlist the contribution of talented guest musicians on drums and percussion. Heavily keyboard based (especially the piano), their style is a mixture of jazz, rock and classical (symphonic) music with dark, mysterious overtones without being sinister - more like suspenseful. While unacknowledged, I hear sone Canterbury influence here.

I had not seen that person in the chat before, and seeing that avatar made me dismayed and angry at the same time. It made me realize that we are very lucky to have this space *mostly* free of trolls, and I should not take it for granted.

So what was Vangelis' most prog release, Beauborg?

Not sure, Andy. His output was varied, much interesting ambient material. Maybe "China"?

China was the first LP of his I bought after hearing it on Stars End when it was released.

would it be safe to say that keyboards play an intrigal part in the Canterbury sound?

kentman, many of the Canterbury groups were indeed keyboard driven.

But I would not go so far to say it is a prerequisite.

The UK elements of the Canterbury sound (British manner of singing, droll lyrics about British life) don't apply to the international groups.

The light-hearted style, though, is essential to the Canterbury scene.

And when keyboards are there, the fuzzed organ typifies the Canterbury sound.

And of course, the jazzy elements in the melodies.

And it has to be tuned to the key of W

@Christine ya missed it earlier. Mysterious technical difficulties plagued the stream after Flex's show, and that ID kept playing over and over again for over half an hour, with the first couple seconds looping. Eventually the clapping from the ID got crustified and it became a solid harsh tone. Wish I recorded it lol

Also, my now-91-year-old mother did at one time know of the Beatles. She is so classically oriented though that once my sister and I moved out (and our tastes changed), she forgot about them

@DtO, I caught most of both (or maybe only one??) of your RPI shows last year. I lived in Italy as a teenager in the early/mid 70s for 2 years so many of the names were familiar. Though the only RPI record I have/had was PFM L'Isola di Niente

@Andy Wing, a lot of these groups reform years later, but I am always hesitant to explore their newer output.

Even among groups that last a long time, often their style changes, gets simplified, or altered to suit pop tastes.

This show really is tremendous. Thanks, DTO. Where you found that Arkham recording, and some of the others, is a mystery. It sounds like it was literally unearthed from a mine. ⛏️

While I generally try to avoid harvesting from the internet, several of the more obscure recordings this week had to be obtained that way.
