Tortilla Flat Tortilla Flat
für ein ¾ Stündchen s/r 1974

The German band Tortilla Flat, named after the John Steinbeck novel, released their only record "für ein ¾ Stündchen" as a private pressing in 1974.

6281551761d3a.jpg

6281552c83e34.jpg

Apart from the musical influence the band showed also some typical Canterbury tongue in cheek humor with the title "für ein ¾ Stündchen" (for a 3/4 hour), pointing in a humorous way to the average length of a vinyl record.

Moving Gelatine Plates - Astromonster
Moving Gelatine Plates Astromonster
The World Of Genius Hans Replica Records 1972

Formed in Sartrouville, France, in 1968, disbanded in 1972. Their music was distinctly apolitical, filled with a sense of humor and an irreverence that distinguished them from many of their more brooding contemporaries.

Stubbs - First Meeting
Stubbs First Meeting
The Idyll Party 1984

The Japanese band "Stubbs" (apparently naming themselves after 'The Stubbs Effect' by Hatfield and The North), was creating music in the Canterbury scene vein during the late 80's over a couple of albums which didn't get much circulation.

6281462071cd8.jpg

You'll hear watered down National Health & Hatfield and The North here. The drumming is particularly weak
7:49 AM
moleslope - Changing
moleslope Changing
SLOPE Dewfall Records 2019

Although describing their influences as post rock and minimal music, this Tokyo based group also wears its Canterbury influences on its sleeves, with their name "Moleslope" coming from the combination of Matching Mole and 'slope', for the slopes of Canterbury region in England.

Picchio dal Pozzo Cocomelastico

Picchio dal Pozzo Mederno ballabile (Richiesta con Dedica)
Abbiamo tutti i suoi problemi Marquee Inc. 2010

Their second release "Abbiamo tutti i suoi problemi" seems to have been influenced by Henry Cow's "Western Culture", RIO's 'Stormy Six' from Italy, and Frank Zappa's jazz compositions. Combining these influences (along with Italian prog rock), the music is complex in a RIO style, yet accessible.

Dedalus Conn
Dedalus Trident, Italy 1973

Dedalus was founded in Pinerolo Italy in 1973, disbanded in 1979. The eponymous first LP was their most Soft Machine-like album, featuring some particularly spacey experimentation.

Arkham - Upstairs In The Granary
Arkham Upstairs In The Granary
Arkham Sub rosa 2021

'Arkham' is an early 70's Belgian prog band that featured keyboard player Jean-Luc Manderlier who would later join Magma, drummer Daniel Denis who would also move on to Magma as well as Univers Zero, and drummer Patrick Cogneaux. During this early stage, recorded between 1970-72, they exhibited influences by Soft Machine and Egg. These old recordings were first released in 1994.

This band's career spans over five albums released between 1974 and 1984. Often referred to as the Belgian answer to Zao, they offer a mixture of prog rock, jazz and Canterbury styles, drawing their influences mainly from Magma, King Crimson, Hatfield and The North and of course, Zao. One of the premier groups from Belgium. This is their debut LP.

Cos - L'idiot Leon
Cos L'idiot Leon
Viva boma Musea 1976

"Viva Boma" is their 2nd release, with a goofy edge (in a different but similar slant than the Dutch group Supersister). Cos is led by flautist/guitarist Daniel Schell and feature the unique vocals of his wife, Pascale Son, who uses nonsense syllables to suggest a semblance of language (not unlike Magma).

A Triggering Myth - The Eisenhour Slumber
A Triggering Myth The Eisenhour Slumber
The Remedy of Abstraction The Laser's Edge 2006

The band was formed in 1989 by Rick Eddy and Tim Drumheller, an American duo of multi-instrumentalists who handle keyboards, guitars, percussions, flute and trumpet, although they regularly enlist the contribution of talented guest musicians on drums and percussion. Heavily keyboard based (especially the piano), their style is a mixture of jazz, rock and classical (symphonic) music with dark, mysterious overtones without being sinister - more like suspenseful. While unacknowledged, I hear sone Canterbury influence here.

ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 7:51:58 AM
No sir.
kentman 7:52:09 AM
would it be safe to say that keyboards play an intrigal part in the Canterbury sound?
TAndy 7:52:15 AM
!!
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 7:52:56 AM
kentman, many of the Canterbury groups were indeed keyboard driven.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 7:53:26 AM
But I would not go so far to say it is a prerequisite.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 7:56:12 AM
The UK elements of the Canterbury sound (British manner of singing, droll lyrics about British life) don't apply to the international groups.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 7:56:44 AM
The light-hearted style, though, is essential to the Canterbury scene.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 7:58:00 AM
And when keyboards are there, the fuzzed organ typifies the Canterbury sound.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 7:58:48 AM
And of course, the jazzy elements in the melodies.

TAndy 8:19:43 AM
I'll soon be off a bit myself to drive home. I'll be sure to chat while driveing with one foot up on the dashboard
TAndy 8:19:56 AM
Nah not yet
Andy Wing 8:23:32 AM
Haven't heard Dedalus in a while, nice track! From Discogs it looks like the founders reformed the group in the 1990's?
Rob from Maryland 🇺🇦 🌻 🦀 🐦 8:24:11 AM
@DtO, I caught most of both (or maybe only one??) of your RPI shows last year. I lived in Italy as a teenager in the early/mid 70s for 2 years so many of the names were familiar. Though the only RPI record I have/had was PFM L'Isola di Niente
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:26:13 AM
@Andy Wing, a lot of these groups reform years later, but I am always hesitant to explore their newer output.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:27:12 AM
Even among groups that last a long time, often their style changes, gets simplified, or altered to suit pop tastes.
TAndy 8:38:15 AM
Alright, Dutchie style!
Rob F 8:39:39 AM

Good morning Rob F and Mok. Super set here so far, DTO.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:53:52 AM
Glad you are enjoying.
kentman 8:55:47 AM
seems these Canterbury bands have borrowed from the musical suite of classical music
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 8:57:02 AM
@kentman, yes, they often were inspired by classical music as well. Some more than others, clearly.
Rob from Maryland 🇺🇦 🌻 🦀 🐦 8:58:13 AM
On my brief walk I saw a Downy Woodpecker, which wasn't in a well, and a catbird.

I know he-s not part of the Canterbury scene, but Richard Thompson has a great new memoir out

Henry the human fly
Rob from Maryland 🇺🇦 🌻 🦀 🐦 9:11:16 AM
@Christine, kind of. It was asking about New Jersey and Philly

Or the same ? I read the one that came out last year. Great informative book. Love Richard
Brian D 9:15:16 AM
"Beeswing: Losing My Way and Finding My Voice 1967-1975" came out last year. I was hoping he would put out a part 2, 3 etc to cover the next decades
kentman 9:15:24 AM
beeswing losing my way etc. that one Brian
Brian D 9:16:53 AM
He just gets better. Listener & chat regular Patrick just recently told us that Richard has a free concert in NJ coming up later this year

Christine 🌛 9:19:47 AM
This show really is tremendous. Thanks, DTO. Where you found that Arkham recording, and some of the others, is a mystery. It sounds like it was literally unearthed from a mine. ⛏️
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:20:24 AM
Arkham was courtesy of the good folks at Cuneiform.
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ (host) 9:21:43 AM
While I generally try to avoid harvesting from the internet, several of the more obscure recordings this week had to be obtained that way.

Thanks, DSM. That's gratifying to hear. Really the only point in preparing these shows is the knowledge that others can appreciate it. Otherwise, I can just play my own stereo at home.
DSM 9:45:49 AM
I've def learned a lot from The New Abnormal, always appreciate your shows DTO!
