A little oasis in the swelter of Princeton

Apparently at 6 pm there's supposed to be thunderstorms (?!?!?!) The sun is blazin' rn!

Princeton has been a oasis for me time to time for various reasons since I was around four years old. I keep a little piece of flat slate from the old junction rail stop roof in my wallet. lol.

One of my young memories was that same station surrounded by snow and enjoying the heater in the building. Ironically obtuse weather wise.

....but Saturday night i saw the longest lasting meteor ever, at 9:30 PM. It went from South to North and lasted about 6 seconds!!

...Corn that high at about end of July actually..

I have seen many meteor showers in the Mohave Desert, but nothing like that. Itsy Bitsy's every couple of seconds is cool though too, but 6 seconds is awesome.

@ Readie: BTW I took the FM into the shower with me, really liked hearing the Peggy Lee and Sinatra!!!

@Alan- how cool is that- I often take WPRB into the shower...some nice resonance of course...

@Roffle - when I was at Lake George years ago, I think it was the Pleides - amazing - no light pollution at all! So many and so quick!

Hi all. It’s been a beautiful & sunny day here in the AC area.

summer should remind us of the shore and how we're killing whales and dolphins under the guise of fighting the spectre of climate change while industrializing the oceans. Where are the champions of yesterday who fought to save the whales. I'm embarrassed by what our society has become. I guess I'll write a song about it that will never be heard. Next time you're at the beach and there is no windmill farm say a prayer of thanks....before it's too late.

@Alan - it truly is amazing to watch-I’ll say her, based on behavior. Paired up this year & haven’t seen her until after the male tries to distract.

I didn't know that birds returned to their nests, if the nests were left undisturbed until this spring. A pair of mourning (morning?) doves who abandoned their nest after rearing two hatchlings last June came back to the nest -- conveniently located in our doorless garage -- and had two more sets (so, 4 altogether) of baby birds over the past 2 months. What a treat to see that transpire!

Catbirds ate out blueberries a couple years ago - we have now implemented a multi-tiered defense system: two layers of bird netting, CDs and other reflective devices hanging from branches to disorient them, and a discarded length of black garden hose pretending to be a large snake ... these were quite effective last Summer, yielding 6 quarts of blueberries from just two bushes

@ Randy: But I love their song, kinda like the Jazz Artists of the bird kingdom..

@Randy -- What an ingenious defense system! I've heard of a 'cat-baffle' before but not a 'catbird-baffle' until now!

@Teresa - a friend of mine has a "cage" built around hers - a solid frame with netting attached; this lets the bushes "breathe and grow" more than covering with netting does

Currently, I do not hang any nice clothing outside to dry, as, well, mulberries are ripe & the birds like them…

There is a Heron Rookery that has a variety of wading birds and their chicks right now including Great White Egrets, Little Blue Herons, White Ibis, Glossy Ibis, Yellow Crowned and Black Crowned Herons and more...
