Neal Dare Waves

Born and raised in Cleveland OH, Neal Dare Waves has always been a lifetime music fan, concert goer, and music collector. Even before college, Neal was attending rock'n'roll shows at the old Richfield Coliseum, Public Hall, and Music Hall; however, these shows were mostly classic rock/arena rock, which Neal, even in high school, was eschewing for more esoteric, progressive, innovative, underground bands. Upon turning 18, Neal attended a Ramones concert at the old Cleveland Agora. This life-changing event drove Neal even further into the new/underground music scene and general admission club shows. This musical growth was furthered when Neal started college at Case Western Reserve University. Finding new friends with similar musical tastes enabled Neal to become familiar with even more great bands. It was only natural for Neal to get involved with the campus radio station WRUW. Way, way, way back in the distant past, Neal started at WRUW with a 4am-6am show ("Water On The Ears") on Friday nite/Saturday morning. The next semester, Neal bumped up to 2am-4am with his show "Sound Affects" (from The Jam's disc of the same name - Neal would open each show with a Jam song). The 3rd semester was the charm - Neal's show was expanded to 2am-6am and he came up with the show name "Dare Waves" - the show name has remained the same ever since. All told, Neal held down the WRUW Friday nite/Sat morn shift for 20 years, between Joe Riznar's "Your Favoritie Rebellion", Jim Szabo's "Down By The Cuyahoga" and Wade Tolleson's "Diversified Inc.". When Joe Banks (host of "Rhythmajik") retired from WRUW, Neal moved to the Wed 7:30pm-10pm timeslot in the workday evening shift. At the start of 2011, Neal moved into the Wednesday drive time shift that he holds to this day - Wed 5pm-8pm. Currently, Neal is WRUW's 4th most senior DJ, behind Jim Szabo, Wade Tolleson, and Cousin Jimmy Wilson. Having been fortunate enough to never leave Cleveland, Neal has never missed a semester of programming, and "Dare Waves" has been a constant staple of WRUW's wonderful programming schedule.
