We get to hit some of my favorite artists this week, such as Robert Forster [Go-Betweens], The Slits [there are 2 new archival releases offering stuff you haven’t heard before], The Leaving Trains, and Herman Brood & His Wild Romance. There is the latest release from Igor Records [The Harry Von Zells LP], and awesome Boston band Crow Follow. There is Tom Heyman, an artist I discovered when he toured with Dan Stuart a few years ago.

4th of July here in the US is a big holiday - Gulls Window Circus has a big change today, leaving 20 weeks on non-rock shows and returning to rock. In typical fashion, this show varies in timeline and geography, intermingling the known, the unknown, Europe, the US, older and newer.

The 20th and final week in the non-rock 12″ singles played alphabetically series – a continuation of last week’s wrap up, stuff is played randomly. There are a new re-edits in this reggae-heavy show: Ben Jamin edits Carol Williams ‘Just Feel’, a Salsoul track from 1976, Peter Tosh covers Chuck Berry’s 1958 hit ‘Johnny B. Goode’, John Holt covers Curtis Mayfield’s ‘Stoned Out Of My Mind’. The second hour shifts out of the reggae/soul feel and adds some electronic tracks.

The 19th week in the non-rock 12" singles played alphabetically series - one more week to go! This week and next week break the pattern and simply cover 12" singles I received since this series started. The (unspoken) model I had been following, of selecting singles from labels I don't extensively follow, is also left behind. Many of my favorite labels appear this and next week.

The 17th week in the non-rock 12" singles played alphabetically series closes out the letters, taking us from U to Z. There will be 2 more weeks of the series to cover 12" singles that came out since this series started. Historic artists in this show are War, E.T. Webster, Klaus Weiss, Womack & Womack and Bernie Worrell. I can identify 5 of the re-edits. Daniel Wang edits Culture Club 'I'm Afraid Of Me'. Two celebrity remixers: Justin Strauss (of 70s Long Island band Milk 'n Cookies) remixes Woolfy, and Frankie Knuckles remixes Womack & Womack. Leo Zero edits Eric B. & Rakim 'I Know You Got Soul' and The Clash 'Magnificent Seven'.

The 17th week in the non-rock 12″ singles played alphabetically series brings us to the letter T. Aside from 3 70s tracks [Lamar Thomas, Hamilton Brothers, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons], there are a bunch of original production & re-edits from The Ivory Boy, Tolouse Low Trax, Manuel Tur [Germany], 33.10.3402 [Serbia], Prins Thomas [Norway], Turbo Boom-Boom [France], Tiago (and also his TNT Subhead guise) [Portugal], Tomaga, Tom Of England [London], Anton Klint & Edvin E, Tryck & Ton [Sweden]. The re-edits I can identify are The Ivory Boy edits Le Figlie Del Vento ‘Mare’ 1978 from Italy, Tom Of England (Thomas Bullock) twists Anarchy In The UK into something entirely else, Treasure edits B-52s ‘Deep Sleep’ (from the Mesopotamia LP in 1982), Tropical Tricks has an Al Kent edit of Hamilton Brothers ‘Music Makes The World Go Round’ 1978, Pilooski edits Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, and the show closes with Talking Drums editing the unrelated 1985 band Talking Drums ‘Sweet July’.

The 14th week of the non-rock 12″ singles played alphabetically series covers the letters R & S. Only one identified re-edit (The Revenge edit Hot Chocolate ‘Heaven Is In The Backseat Of My Cadillac’, Brixton 1976) but a lot of interesting new music [Red Axes, Optic, Rework, Riccio, Roberto, Sonny Rock, Rondenion, Saine], a collaboration by the Italo obscurities guru Flemming Dalum on the Red Laser label, a well-known artist under one of his other names (Psi Performer = Anthony Rother), the iconic Sade remixed by DJ Spinna, and classic-amazing disco from Walter Gibbons mixing Salsoul Orchestra.

Week 13 of the non-rock 12″ singles played alphabetically series covers the letters P & Q. Many geographies and eras are here, put together in a way I hope makes sense. Among the re-edits, these are the ones I can identify: Persnickety Presents (Derrick L. Carter) edits Suzy Q ‘Get On Up And Do It Again’ NYC 1981, Phantom Slasher (Idjut Boys) edit Junior Byron ‘Dance To The Music’ Canada 1983, Pilooski edits Double ‘Woman Of The World’ Switzerland 1984, Pittsburgh Track Authority edits Step By Step ‘I Always Wanted To Be In A Band’ Milwaukee 1976, Pontchartrain edits Gwen McRae ‘Keep The Fire Burning’ NYC 1982, and The Popular Peoples Front edits Fela Kuti ‘Roforofo Fight’ Nigeria 1972.

The 12th week of the non-rock 12″ singles played alphabetically series covers the letters N, O & P. Today I notice the wide berth this series is parking in, covering dance [Joey Negro Vs. Horse Meat Disco, Henri-Pierre Noël], international [Ogoya Nengo And The Dodo Women’s Group], hip hop [N8NOFACE], Japanese [9dw], experimental/electronic [Nisennenmondai, Om Unit], Polish [Noon]. Dark ambient [O Yuki Conjugate], balearic [Pacific Horizons] and that is only talking about the first hour. As usual, there are many re-edits. These are the ones I can identify the source material of: The Patchouli Brothers edits MFSB ‘Plenty Good Lovin’ 1976 from Philadelphia, Parlour edits Sådd ‘Johnny Gitarr’ 1979 from Sweden. Not a re-edit, but maybe my fave track of the show is The Parallax Corporation (a duo that includes Intergalactic Gary) ‘Anti Social Tendencies’.

The 11th week in the non-rock 12″ singles played alphabetically series covers the letters M and N. Cover star Montparnasse (Masanori Ikeda, who we heard in the I portion) brings 1999 J-pop to this series, while Monkey Timers bring 2016 vintage J-pop in. There are many re-edits, some of which I can indentify: Members Only edit Rinder & Lewis (El Coco, Saint Tropez, Le Pamplemousse) ‘Anger’ from 1977 Los Angeles, Mind Fair edits Way Of The West ‘Feel The Steel’ from 1984, Miss Kittin & The Hacker cover The Eurythmics, Parlour edit Sådd ‘Johnny Gitarr’ from 1979 Sweden, Nastyboy edits Al Green ‘Still In Love With You’. There is much to love – all tracks belong in your awareness, so dig in.

For the 9th week in the non-rock 12″ singles played alphabetically series, we cover the letters K and L. Many of the tracks are re-edits, almost all unidentified, thought I have spotted a few: Kon edits Kenny Mann Jr. & The Liquid Pleasure Band ‘Tin Top’ from NYC 1980 (great track!), Alexis Le-Fan edits New Beat Express ‘I Love You & I Hate You’ from Belgium 1988, the Legalize Lambada has Albion editing Boomerang ‘Yeti’ from Italy 1978, Pat Les Stache does an edit of a track from the Music For Dancefloors: The Cream Of The Chappell Music Library Sessions comp from Strut in 2001, Rune Lindbæk edits Adriano Celentano ‘Disc Jockey’ from Italy 1972, Los Chicharrons sample Claudja Barry ‘Love For The Sake Of Love’ 1976, and Loud-E edits Slang ‘Pinch Roller’ from South Africa 1978.

The 8th week in the non-rock 12″ singles played alphabetically series covers the letters I, J, K. Many re-edits, most which I can’t identify. Of those I can, Al Kent edits Velvet Hammer ‘Happy’ from 1977 Chicago, Jonny 5 edits János Másik ‘Apocalypso’ from 1989 Hungary, JV (Justin Van Der Volgen) edits Bobby Thurston’s ‘You Got What it Takes’ from 1980. I am sure you will discover new artists to love, like I discovered Ignatius Jones while programming this show.

Hoot Mood edits Coati Mundi ‘Que Pasa – Me No Pop I’ from 1981, and Japanese jazz trumpeter Terumasa Hino ‘Send Me Your Feelings’ from 1979.

Today is the sixth week in the non-rock 12″ singles played alphabetically series. The letters F, G, and H are up. Every track vetted for joy. As for re-edits, The Fantasy edits Prince’s bassistBrown Mark’s band Mazarati ‘Jerk Out’. Hauke Freer edits Focus guitarist Jan Akkerman’s ‘She’s So Divine’ Amsterdam 1979. Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra brings in Brazilian artist Arthur Verocai, an artist worth checking out on his own. Eddy Grant, whose career spanned decades and genres, appears in his 1978 period, 4 years before his world-conquering hit ‘Electric Avenue’. Luxury edits Foreigner’s 1981 mega-hit to great effect. Andi Hanley edits Annette’s 1988 track ‘Dream 17’. Chicago’s Ron Hardy does two edits for his edits series: Willie Hutch’s 1982 and Baby Huey’s 1971 tracks.

Today is the 6th week in the non-rock 12″ singles played alphabetically series. Today we cover the letters D and E. The show starts with a DJ Spun re-edit of the 1978 Bombers track ‘The Mexican’. The other notable re-edits are DW Edits Undisputed Truth edit of Lil’ Red Riding Hood and Tee Scott’s edit of The Joneses Sugar Pie Guy. There are deep minimal tracks in this show as well as disco edits, or even straight-up disco/soul, such as the Martin L. Dumas Jr track. Things get chilled out with Dos Palos and Tony Esposito, and experimental with EYE. Lots of sounds, all stirred together and caramelized for you.

The fourth week in the non-rock 12″ singles played alphabetically series completes the letter ‘C’ and starts ‘D’. If an artist appears to not belong, that is because the 12″ series starts with D and the single has multiple artists on it. There are sev real awesome tracks on their own, covers, and re-edits The Creams cover Joe Moks. The Police are re-edited by DJ Harvey, J.J. Cale vey Dirty Sound System, Pink Floyd by danyb, the Cast of South Pacific by Disconnection, Nina Simone by Disco Tech. Big names, nice re-edits. Chicks On Speed sing on the DJ Hell track.

The third week in the non-rock 12″ played alphabetically series completes the letter ‘B’ and starts the letter ‘C’. The scope of the sounds is fairly wide, and hidden within are Sun Ra and Elvis re-edits (The Cosmologist and Pepe California). Comic Kids track has stuck in my head, but mostly I have enjoyed the trip though these 2 hour-long segments.
