Hello?
Maura Johnston (host) 1:41:40 PM
Hello!
Jon Solomon 1:43:18 PM
Still doing Spinitron tests, wanted to see if I can use the same login for chat at another station. I can!
Jon Solomon 1:43:35 PM
Also, does ZBC have a "mic break" option to show when you're talking?
Bob H 1:43:16 PM
Nice show, Maura. Love this song (Rajan James) among many others!
Maura Johnston (host) 1:43:31 PM
Thanks Bob!
Maura Johnston (host) 1:43:39 PM
Jon, I do not know.
Bob H 1:46:33 PM
Speaking of Spinitron, is there any reason why some songs get skipped? I don’t know tha API mechanism, but some ideas: a) maybe the dj missed it? b) the Z doesn’t have it entered yet? c) maybe too obscure? - a lot of times Shazam doesn’t get it either
Maura Johnston (host) 1:48:32 PM
@Bob from my experience it's when songs are too new or obscure to be picked up by the auto-detection software. (Not sure what's used for our robots, but I've seen that a lot of stuff that isn't on digital music services, or is just-released new, doesn't get picked up.)
Audrey 1:51:22 PM
Gotta keep the bots on their toes! ;)
Bob H 1:53:48 PM
Cool, thanks. That’s what I figured. While I’m at it, Jon’s “mic break” option would be useful - I’ll sometimes think “I like that song, two before the dj started talking” but if I look sometime later I have no idea when that was. I wonder if there’s any way to add a “Note” entry for you, so you could type some info on a song (especially for someone like Carl, who has so much great info on songs and bands), and maybe some routine could also kick in and mention a Mic Break.
Bob H 1:54:09 PM
Plus it’d give the programmers something to do!
Maura Johnston (host) 1:54:46 PM
There is a "note" entry!
Maura Johnston (host) 1:55:57 PM
But it doesn't get used often enough. It's also a bit clunky
Bob H 1:57:17 PM
Would it be useful for that type of situation? So you played, say, Coricky, but you could mention it’s Ian MacKaye’s band, or something. “Oh, they’re playing Friday at Great Scott” (I know that’s now impossible :( )
Bob H 1:58:47 PM
Maura - “clunky”: I’m sure there are some covid-bored students around that might like a nice little project?!
Maura Johnston (host) 2:00:02 PM
I think it would be useful for that situation for sure; I definitely would use the "note" function to alert people to upcoming shows by bands I played
Bob H 1:59:49 PM
Sorry for all the ideas - too many glasses of coke today!
Maura Johnston (host) 2:00:31 PM
No, keep them coming! I am not sure who develops Spinitron (maybe Jon knows?) but they should see all this!
Maura Johnston (host) 2:01:40 PM
I watched the video for "The Ghost at Number One" for the first time in forever over the weekend and boy, is it dark.
Maura Johnston (host) 2:01:44 PM
Such a great song though.
Bob H 2:01:46 PM
The DJ could also use it to advertise their own web page, or something like that, especially if they’re just guest dj’ing or something
Maura Johnston (host) 2:03:44 PM
Yeah, for sure.
Maura Johnston (host) 2:04:03 PM
Well, we can do that on profile pages: https://spinitron.com/WZBC/dj/3201/Maura-Johnston
Bob H 2:03:48 PM
Now I’ll have to watch that video!
Bob H 2:05:12 PM
Yup, but if it was inline with the songs, listeners might be more likely to visit it. And I’m not even in marketing!
Maura Johnston (host) 2:06:19 PM
(this aveo song, which is not available on any digital music platforms, didn't get recognized by the bot)
Bob H 2:07:30 PM
Yeah, shazam didn’t get it either. And often those are the ones that catch your attention, cuz they’re unfamiliar
Maura Johnston (host) 2:09:31 PM
The bot is also maddening with the year/label metadata it auto-enters
Maura Johnston (host) 2:09:41 PM
Also, this set wound up being kind of intense!!
Bob H 2:10:09 PM
And that’s a situation where if the auto-detect didn’t know the song, it could pop up a note to the dj that it was missed
Bob H 2:11:14 PM
A dark song that would fit in here is “Wrong” by Antipoda, a Depeche Mode cover
Maura Johnston (host) 2:13:33 PM
Spinitron definitely needs a "reissue year" field
Bob H 2:14:29 PM
Hmmm. Definitely an intense set!
Rat 2:18:17 PM
The Robert Wyatt song was incredible. How did I miss this guy? Thanks for the "new" music to explore.
Maura Johnston (host) 2:19:52 PM
Oh, you're in for a treat!
Maura Johnston (host) 2:32:55 PM
whoops i meant to say 'dinner party is' instead of 'freeze tag is.' at least the metadata here is ok
Maura Johnston (host) 2:39:58 PM
this set has two songs about being on public transit!
Bob H 2:42:44 PM
Raincoats - it’s amazing how they can so current after 40+ years
Maura Johnston (host) 2:48:52 PM
ok let's see if this gets picked up...
Maura Johnston (host) 2:49:11 PM
guessing it won't
Maura Johnston (host) 2:49:31 PM
that was definitely the most WNUR segue I've done while at WZBC, haha

Bob H 2:52:57 PM
You did an excellent show. I didn’t hear the segue but i get the impression it didn’t go as well as you’d like, lol?
Maura Johnston (host) 2:53:16 PM
No, it went well! Just the songs. Silver Apples into Assembly Line People Program (see the link I posted just now)
