JeffB (host) 1:08:25 PM
jeez forgot to open the gates to chat ! sorry
Peter Ireland 1:17:09 PM
love the old vinyl .. and the new music too! thanks again jeff
Pat Irwin 1:17:46 PM
Are the archives up yet?
JeffB (host) 1:20:14 PM
@Peter thanks! Yeah wish I got this cartridge years ago.. it's particularly good on full albums and 45 singles.
JeffB (host) 1:20:51 PM
@pat you mean zbconline.com ? I think those go up after the hour is over..
Pat Irwin 1:21:22 PM
Not last I checked :/
JeffB (host) 1:23:38 PM
@Pat check again, hit "refresh" ? 12 noon hour today is up, along with the rest of today, archive appears to be functioning normally
Pat Irwin 1:24:55 PM
OK thx
-bot 1:25:13 PM
beep beep
JeffB (host) 1:26:39 PM
beep is playing from a crappy old 45RPM big hole vinyl I've had for almost 40 years.. :)
Kevin Polk 1:27:48 PM
checking in post Zoom
JeffB (host) 1:29:21 PM
Hey @Kevin! You've got another set coming up in the next few minutes..
JeffB (host) 1:29:42 PM
couple songs i didn't play last week..
Pat Irwin 1:29:54 PM
Yay Pylon! I knew this show was going to be great from the get-go. Hence question ref. archives. Now if it'll only download :/
PeterC 1:29:41 PM
I played M-train last week....I am not missing the vinyl era..
JeffB (host) 1:32:10 PM
Vinyl is good! That Slits 45 I opened the show with - I can't find that digitally - all the versions available are completely different and watered down.
JeffB (host) 1:35:52 PM
@Pat here's the secret: if you wanna listen to a file on the archive, right click on the file and try to "copy link address". Paste it into a new tab in your browser, change the .m3u at the end to .mp3. Then you can play directly, download.
Kevin Polk 1:38:22 PM
oh geez, this set will be a surprise to me too then
Kevin Polk 1:39:09 PM
I *just* finished hooking up my new turntable today; about to start into ripping like 300 "punk & new wave" singles
Kevin Polk 1:39:19 PM
over the next 3 months at least
Pat Irwin 1:42:22 PM
That rings a bell. Thanks!
JeffB (host) 1:42:59 PM
@Kevin you have a good cartridge i hope? I just got a new one, amazing difference.
Kevin Polk 1:43:11 PM
looking for recommendations, so far only have what came in box
PeterC 1:43:14 PM
@jeff...yeah that is true..the early digital remasterings pretty much sucked..But digital doesn't skip
JeffB (host) 1:45:59 PM
I got the Ortofon 2M Blue cartridge pre mounted on a headshell. Can swap back with the old Stanton I was using in 5 seconds, handy for really crusty old records I'm worried might shred the Ortofon.. I still have 78RPM discs the Stanton's more suited for..
Kevin Polk 1:46:59 PM
I particularly like that Kingdom of the HS song
JeffB (host) 1:47:57 PM
@Kevin you SHOULD... you recommended it:)
Kevin Polk 1:48:17 PM
like this? https://www.amazon.com/Ortofon-2M-Blue-Phono-Cartridge/dp/B001E0CK3K/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=Ortofon+2M+Blue&qid=1595440090&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyNUYwWTFJNTlaRlJIJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMzU0OTAwMkhDNUE5WVI3VjVOQyZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMTM3NTg2M0pHRjM5UEJWRUNUOCZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=
Kevin Polk 1:48:57 PM
>>you recommended it yes, yes I did ;)
JeffB (host) 1:49:30 PM
@Kevin yea that's the cartridge I got
-bot 1:50:55 PM
a Nude Elliptical
-bot 1:51:01 PM
hmm
Kevin Polk 1:51:12 PM
@jeff how long does that needle take to break in?
Kevin Polk 1:51:22 PM
the turntable I mean ;)
JeffB (host) 1:52:34 PM
They say after 40 hours it'll sound better. Sounded great on first drop to me.
JeffB (host) 2:28:07 PM
@-bot.. magnetic cartridge fetish?
DJ Ouroboros 2:29:31 PM
Just had the pleasantly dislocating experience of driving around Toronto and listening to Jeff Berlin
DJ Ouroboros 2:30:18 PM
And kudos for playing LA Witch!
JeffB (host) 2:32:24 PM
@DJ Ouroboros.. thx! if you drive out to Kitchener or Hamilton, you can hear me there too :) i miss being on "the Edge" though
PeterC 2:32:36 PM
ZBCs signal must have gotten better..
Kevin Polk 2:34:14 PM
luxuria - an underappreciated band
PeterC 2:34:19 PM
what are you guys using for TTs. The tech reissue would probably make me feel right at home if it went that way...
John Fisher 2:35:14 PM
Didn't Luxuria open for the Fall at the Channel in '88?
JeffB (host) 2:36:08 PM
I'm using a Technics SP10 that was discarded from another radio station. We used to have these at the Z too.
Kevin Polk 2:36:07 PM
i don't pass the TT snob test, just an Audio Technica AT-LP120XUSB
Kevin Polk 2:36:33 PM
yes Luxuria + The Fall at the Channel was one of the best shows
JeffB (host) 2:37:46 PM
Wow.. bummed i missed that ..
Kevin Polk 2:37:32 PM
sorry but have to tell this story 1 last time; for an encore, Luxuria started into The Light Pours out of Me (Magazine); Noko couldn't get the opening riff right, tried it like 5 times while the band waited; finally he got it and they kicked into the song; serendipity
Kevin Polk 2:37:49 PM
talk about a build up
Kevin Polk 2:38:18 PM
this was during the Fall's Brix years, so if you like that (I did) they were great; still most of the original band at that point
JeffB (host) 2:39:01 PM
funny! worth the wait. Is TLPOoM riff that hard to play?
DJ Ouroboros 2:38:50 PM
I have a Rega Planar 3
DJ Ouroboros 2:39:26 PM
I have heard you out in KW before! That's where I work
DJ Simon 2:39:42 PM
For ttable topic: Project Debut Carbon II, Denon DL110, Bellari tube preamp
Kevin Polk 2:39:49 PM
how do you like the Rega? I was tempted
Kevin Polk 2:40:15 PM
I have a few Technics turntables stashed at work but have not retrieved those for too long now
DJ Ouroboros 2:40:29 PM
It's excellent! But I am bit disappointed with the Rega amp I have
Kevin Polk 2:41:44 PM
>> Is TLPOoM riff that hard to play? It was funny and the band and crowd were waiting on him, they kept the beat going while he figured it out; he took over the guitar role in Magazine for their "recent" reunion so I guess he knows all the songs now
Kevin Polk 2:42:04 PM
The Channel is a venue I miss
PeterC 2:42:42 PM
even al J could figure out how to play TLPOOM
DJ Ouroboros 2:43:15 PM
The Channel was my favourite Boston venure. Saw soooo many good shows there
DJ Simon 2:44:04 PM
Yeah, the Channel – lost my shoes at a Butthole Surfers show there once. Had to stay afterward and look for them amongst the post-show detritus.
Kevin Polk 2:44:15 PM
Channel had a great mix for hardcore shows and "normal" alternative shows, plus other genres too
JeffB (host) 2:45:11 PM
I only saw the Fall at the Paradise. Figures the venue that survived is the one with giant pillars blocking your view.
PeterC 2:45:15 PM
Ive stood behind that same post for 40+ years!!!
Kevin Polk 2:45:23 PM
the first show I saw at the Channel was Black Flag, after the finally kicked off their record label troubles and went back on the road
Kevin Polk 2:45:44 PM
funny, we probably all stood next to each other at the time but no idea who each other are (at least some of us)
JeffB (host) 2:46:44 PM
@Kevin SO true !
PeterC 2:46:24 PM
The channel was my favorite place...I never paid to get in, and I never paid for a drink there ever...My friend Patty booked it for a while and my friend Lisa did all the promo artwork..I'm still in touch with them..
JeffB (host) 2:47:29 PM
OK geek time if you're listening - this song STARTS with my Stanton cartridge, but switches to the Ortofon when the vocals come in
PeterC 2:47:22 PM
Missed Luxuria tho'...I was hanging with the fall in the dressing room and no idea it was howard devoto
Kevin Polk 2:48:16 PM
well you should be forgiven for having a chance to hang out with the Fall; hopefully MES didn't stab you or anything
JeffB (host) 2:49:17 PM
that scar would have been a badge of honor..
Kevin Polk 2:48:57 PM
I should just tell work I'm unavailable Wed 1-3 while I burn off a couple hours reminiscing
Kevin Polk 2:49:12 PM
like, every Wed
JeffB (host) 2:51:13 PM
same, trying to get work done. did that when live at ZBC too
DJ Simon 2:51:57 PM
@JeffB – I was waiting for the Stanton/Ortofon swap out and didn't get to listen closely. Will have to check it out on the archive with the headphones.
Kevin Polk 2:52:29 PM
what was the thinking for the cartridge swap?
PeterC 2:53:12 PM
I found Mark to be nice. One night he was sick of giving interviews at the Rat and introduced me as a member of the fall and had me do the interview for some fanzine..They said they didn't see me on stage and mark piped up the I was shy and stood in the back!!
JeffB (host) 2:53:39 PM
@Simon I listened off the air and heard no difference. Then listened off the stream to take advantage of the delay - the kick drum sounded different.
Kevin Polk 2:53:36 PM
here is a nice version of Marcia Bella by LRM; kind of touching given that Fred died not long after this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUjne298BdM
JeffB (host) 2:54:58 PM
@Kevin, playing from a 45 RPM 12" - the Ortofon didn't handle the intro well, the Stanton actually sounded a lot better. So I used both and edited together after..
PeterC 2:54:39 PM
I have to say I was never skilled enough to change cartridges i the middle of a song!!!!
Kevin Polk 2:54:39 PM
@PeterC lol It is quite sad how substances ravaged MES as time went on. His last 10 years did not seem very happy
Kevin Polk 2:55:46 PM
MES = one of those people that you hoped would somehow turn it around but it eventually became clear he was way too far down he road he was travelling
Kevin Polk 2:56:25 PM
great show today jeff, thanks
PeterC 2:56:57 PM
@KP....Yeah....
JeffB (host) 2:59:08 PM
Hey all thx for being here !!
JeffB (host) 2:59:42 PM
Sorry about that silly filler..
ex DJ tamer 2:59:49 PM
Great show!
ex DJ tamer 3:00:45 PM
Suggested topic for next week: moderately-priced, quality cartridges.
ex DJ tamer 3:01:12 PM
For the unemployed, who can't afford a $200+ unit.
PiGuy 3:02:37 PM
Have the song Want You Gone from this same collection. Video game music is so recognizable.
