2020 has crystallized how farm work and meat factory work couldnā€™t be more crucial or more deeply disrespected. In the field, grievously underpaid farmworkers are now getting a wage freeze, celebrated as ā€œdelivering lower costsā€ to farmersā€”to those who bring the food to your door. What systemic dysfunction could more clearly indict a society that declares workers essential and treats them as expendable? Plus Janine Jackson takes a quick look back at false balance, bad faith claims of electoral fraud, and coverage of violence against trans people.

In Part 1, Hedges surveys the misery in which tens of millions of Americans now find themselves--jobless, without savings, without health insurance, facing eviction, coping with a pandemic, and more. He denounces both major political parties--with special focus on the Democratic Party (including Joe Biden), which has faithfully served the oligarchy and worked to disempower the citizens for many decades.

"Judging by the first week of hearings in February, it doesnā€™t seem to be important whatever the prosecution says or does, or how the defense responds. The decision already appears to have been made." The piece goes on to explain why the US espionage charges are so flimsy as to be laughable, if the consequences weren't so frightening. Yet it doesn't seem to matter.

The Palestinian narrative is most genuine and most powerful when Palestinians tell their stories of resilience following the ethnic cleansing of their land by Israel in 1948. The love of their land and the hold that that love has over their lives resonates generation after generation, even for those who now, years later, live the diaspora. We came across an interview of Dr. Ahmed Abdulmadgeed who now lives in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He is the son of refugees who were driven out of their Palestinian village during the Nakba in 1948 and fled to Gaza. Ahmed is now a Pharmacist. His story is so typical, even though he has been in the diaspora most of his life. Here is how he handles his identity as a Palestinian and a Muslim. The interview takes place at the Indiana Center for Middle East Peace, and is conducted by its director, Dr. Michael Spath.

During the Vietnam War era, peace activists compared American war planners like Robert S. McNamara and Henry Kissinger to Albert Speer, Hitlerā€™s Minister of War Production and Armaments who stood out for his lack of ideological zeal in supporting the Nazi cause. What motivated Speer, rather, was a cold and calculating careerism which was combined with a lack of regard for his countryā€™s victims. Brennanā€™s new memoir reveals a man who displays some of the same qualities as Speerā€”and other American contemporaries. Particularly striking is the pride that he takes in helping to coordinate better bureaucratic procedure for carrying out drone strikes, which terrorized whole communities.

"Conspiracy theory." The term is in frequent use today. It is abundant during present day discourse over the coronavirus pandemic, as voices are rising to raise questions around some of extra-ordinary moves being made by governments to enforce the main narrative. Our government's secret operations and coverups are conspiracies by their very nature. Yet, when truth-seekers learn about them, they are labeled "conspiracy theorists" as a thought-stopper. As soon as you are labelled a ā€˜conspiracy theorist,ā€™ even before you have a chance to muster an argument, the public by and large will immediately develop a distrustful attitude toward you. This is the remainder of Parenti's talk, begun last week.
