New World Notes (one of our occasional sources) Available at NWN's website newworldnotes.blogspot.com 2020
Did you notice that unlike its predecessors, Windows 10 bombards your screen with lots of ads? An engaging and insightful documentary on corporate-sponsored advertising in the 21st century. It explores advertising's ubiquity; its insidiousness; its devastating social, psychological, and environmental effects--and its role in perpetuating the most harmful aspects of corporate capitalism. Part 1 focuses on the commercial takeover of our culture, the problem of industrial overproduction, and the development of the advertising industry to increase demand for products. (We decided to override this week's Counterspin, a "best of 2020" review.)

Today we focus on anti-Semitism, the Zionists definition of which has been broadened to include almost all criticism of Israel as well as support of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement. The charge of anti-Semitism has been weaponized and is being used to squelch free speech on campuses as well as the wider community. This does a disservice not only to those are using legitimate, non violent actions to resist the Israeli occupation, but a disservice to the Jewish people who need energy to be put into opposing the rising tide of genuine anti-semitism. Today we hear a discussion of this by author, journalist and teacher Peter Beinart, Barnard College Professor Nadia El-Haj, and Columbia University professor Rashid Khalidi.
