With James

In these confused times isn't it nice to find some relief? Every week, James will try to bring some sense into this crazy world via the radio waves. Look back. Look forward. Seek the truth. Never dull. Always irreverent. Fight the good fight by just sitting back and listening.

James (host) 9:11:48 AM
Great guy. 1 hour and 40 mins of chat sped by.
JeffB 9:16:57 AM
I wonder if you're the first interviewer to mention the Fall to him. His response was well thought out.
Heather Grunwald 9:18:01 AM
I'm into this interview and CB
James (host) 9:18:19 AM
He made the song in one day...
James (host) 9:19:13 AM
I doubt it. Although not a lot of interviews with him. Certainly none as in-depth or audio.

James (host) 9:26:28 AM

Roger Jermyn 10:29:43 AM
I still suffer from pandemic brain
James (host) 10:30:07 AM
Fave line of interview: "Now i'll worry. Will James like this chorus."
Roger Jermyn 10:30:13 AM
"what day of the week is it?"
James (host) 10:31:23 AM
I only discovered 4Chan last night. Like retro chatboards.
Shanti 10:32:02 AM
I didnโ€™t hear this show before but excellent band, musicians and interview/conversation!๐Ÿ–ค
Roger Jermyn 10:32:24 AM
4Chan has some scary corners . be careful
James (host) 10:33:20 AM
No desire. I went to the music section - garbage.
James (host) 10:34:03 AM
@ Shanti - glad being enjoyed
Roger Jermyn 10:34:17 AM
yeah you would have a better time in a manure pile
James (host) 10:35:59 AM
I had a feeling DFW/Infinite Jest would come up NAD IT DID. All on his accord
Barry Hart 10:46:24 AM
Good morning,James & KOTJ followers,l just wanted to thank you,James, for the superb interview & marvelous music. It was great hearing โ€œDirty Glasses โ€œ twice;l like Greenhouseโ€™s insights, like that one about how if you speak honestly about life today, youโ€™re making a political statement.Yours truly also liked the remarks about the maximalist nature of writers like James Joyce & Thomas Pynchon producing thousand-page novels.Have a lovely weekend, all.
James (host) 10:55:38 AM
That was the last Greenhouse song. Now on, one of my choices. Tom's faves and his Fall picks.
David Kulik 10:56:00 AM
Mark Leyner is fab!
James (host) 10:56:25 AM
@ Barry. Always kindly reassuring
James (host) 10:56:50 AM

Kevin Polk (1) 10:57:30 AM
James, just wanted to pop in quickly to say "Thanks!" for all the shows you have been creating and sharing during the pandemic. It's great stuff and it helps keep people sane during insane times.
James (host) 10:59:16 AM
Thanks for all the kind words. City Isolation and only virtual "connections" have me feeling "holographic" of late.๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป
Allison Dick 11:01:35 AM
I'm loving the writer talk. Where should I start with Phillip Roth?
James (host) 11:02:51 AM
Well...Portnoy's Complaint is the Jewish Catcher in the Rye...but good. Catcher way overrated. My fave Roth...American Pastoral
James (host) 11:03:44 AM
Ooops. One more CG tune
Allison Dick 11:04:13 AM
Catcher is overrated for sure
Allison Dick 11:04:38 AM
thanks for the recs yo
James (host) 11:05:32 AM
A good one for these times of being cancelled The Human Stain...avoid the terrible movie!
James (host) 11:06:29 AM
Better in Trump times...The Plot Against America
James (host) 11:07:24 AM
For it's times...catcher was groundbreaking but the fact that it's overused and serial killers were inspired by proves its mediocrity.
James (host) 11:08:00 AM
Portnoy's also LOL hilarious.
DJ Simon 11:08:34 AM
I like Roth's Zuckerman trilogy.
James (host) 11:09:44 AM
I think Tom and Florence of Dry Cleaning should duet!
Allison Dick 11:11:53 AM
I watched HBO's adaptation of the Plat Against America. It was good. Winona Ryder and John Turturro were great
Allison Dick 11:12:08 AM
that would be a good duet
David Kulik 11:18:07 AM
I don't know that Leyner book, but I'd rec his early ones: My Cousin, My Gastroenterologist; I Smell Esther Williams; Tooth Imprints on a Corn Dog; The Tetherballs of Bougainville; and Et Tu, Babe. Wild, surreal humor.
James (host) 11:25:33 AM
I should get back in tor reading again...and writing...now that I'm "retired."
Allison Dick 11:25:38 AM
sounds right up my allie haha
David Kulik 11:26:32 AM
Did you leave the drone job? I missed that news.
Allison Dick 11:27:56 AM
James I can't recommend Stephen King's "On writing" enough. I write a lot, used to read a ton but I fell out of the habit since the "Golden Age of Television" has been raging. But the book is inspiring me to read so much.
Moles Knows 11:28:14 AM
Fantastic show and great interview. Thanks James.
James (host) 11:28:55 AM
Yes. In July I aborted the drone mission and my personal drone had a catastrophic connection loss and now resides somewhere in the wilds of VT woods. Done with drones.
James (host) 11:29:15 AM
MOLES! Good to hear from and about.
Allison Dick 11:29:36 AM
hah
James (host) 11:32:13 AM
Hip Priest gave me Roth's "Why Write?"
Roger Jermyn 11:32:48 AM
Second King's "On Writing". Another good one is Zinsser's "On Writing Well". I am actually reading that as I listen to the show this morning
James (host) 11:33:31 AM
I have read/reread Zinssers On Writing Well.
James (host) 11:33:36 AM

This is like English class for derelicts up in this piece
Roger Jermyn 11:40:50 AM

James (host) 11:41:00 AM
First sample quote was Stephen Malkmus. This one is Gary Lucas of Beefheart's Magic Band.
Roger Jermyn 11:41:35 AM
I do not write as much as I think I do
James (host) 11:42:36 AM
I'm not as right as I think I am.

James (host) 11:51:41 AM
