Between 2.5 and 3 million people have died from Covid-19. That’s just what is reported. And we know the toll is so much greater, beyond even the more than 128 million people who have been infected by the virus, many with long-lasting and poorly understood repercussions. That’s why a year after the WHO declared coronavirus a pandemic, protests demanding global access to vaccines were held around the world. At this point, media could ask how the global economy can recover if only parts of the globe are vaccinated…. But what if they went deeper and wondered: If we don’t learn from this pandemic that none of us can be healthy unless all of us are healthy, how many chances will we get?

Official show summary: "The author of Tangled Up in Blue, Georgetown University law professor Rosa Brooks, looks deep inside the policing of America’s cities." [Brooks was invited, sworn, and trained to play cop for a while and then write this dumb book. Maybe this, but on the other hand that. Blah blah blah. WE APOLOGIZE for wasting your time with this NPR-style pabulum.]

There has been a process underway involving both Israelis and Palestinians to frame a plan to move forward to achieve one democratic, secular state in Palestine/Israel which guarantees equal rights to all its people regardless of race, ethnicity or religion who live between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea . One of those involved in this effort is Jeff Halper, who is an American-born anthropologist, author, lecturer, and political activist who was born and raised in Minnesota, but has lived in Israel for the past 38 years. He is a co-founder of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions, and author of Decolonizing Israel, Liberating Palestine. This week we feature Jeff Halper in conversation with Prof. Leila Farsakh of the Umass Boston, on a webinar moderated by Michael Spath of the Indiana Center for Peace in the Middle East.

Stan (reading/commenting) "Identity Card" (English version)
Poem by Mahmoud Darwish Darwish's poetry is available at many places, for example genius.com/Mahmoud-darwish-identity-card-english-version-annotated
Mahmoud Darwish's award-winning poetry gives voice to the struggles of the Palestinian people. He was born in Al-Birweh, in Galilee. He would be 80 if he hadn't died 13 years ago in Texas. At the age of six, he and his family were expelled from their village under a shower of Zionist bombs. For more, go to mahmouddarwish.ps/en . Does Darwish's place of birth relate him to the traditional myth of Easter? Perhaps! Certainly, parallels might be argued matching the murderous cruelty of Governor Pontius Pilate with that of today's Israeli butchers. "Identity Card" is one of Darwish's most popular signature poems that made him a constant target of vicious criticism by Israel's religious, ultranationalist and conservative groups.

Host Barry Vogel (interviewing) "Paul R. Griffin – Sowing the Seeds of Racism"
Radio Curious, Ukiah, California (one of TJR's occasional sources) Available at RC's website radiocurious.org 2001
Originally Broadcast: March 1, 2001. Racism, as a part of the American religious culture, can be traced to the religious concepts of some of the earliest European settlers in North America. Professor Paul R. Griffin explores these roots in his book, “Seeds of Racism in the Soul of America,” linking the concepts in the Puritan belief system to long lasting racist effects. He argues that racism is itself a religion in the United States and is closely related to America Christianity. He claims that efforts to erase racism have failed because they have concentrated on its visible manifestations rather than its ideological character.
