Besides the standard media fluff about being sure to file, we observe that there are other stories, disconnected stories, about tax policy: Who pays, how much, and why? We’ve talked about that a fair amount on this show, and we revisit two of those conversations today. Last April, we spoke with Emory University law professor and author Dorothy A. Brown about how, though you can scour tax policy and find no mention of race, our tax system still affects Black people very differently, in ways most conversation obscures. And in February 2019, we spoke with economist Dean Baker about why the idea of raising taxes on the superwealthy makes sense to many mainstream economists and to the general public, but still faces a perennial headwind in corporate media.

New in New Zealand Parliament at age 22, Marilyn Waring was shocked and dismayed when she learned that all countries that are members of the UN are forced to keep their books and design their budgets under the system of National Income Accounting. Killing people, or preparing to kill them, is considered very valuable in the international economic system. The death, homelessness, injury, poverty and starvation caused by the use of these weapons is not even registered as a deficit. This segment opens with war. Under the GDP accounting system, war is the biggest growth industry of all. A segment recorded in the Philippines shows that the labor of women feeding their children with subsistence agriculture is of no value, while sexual slavery that brings tourists to the country is counted as valuable in the GDP. Waring ends by proposing a time based accounting system and recommends that women take over the political process by demanding gender parity.

In the first segment we feature Palestinian activist Linda Sarsour and Black activist Marc Lamont Hill in an Al Jazeera recorded conversation on intersectionality,the linkage of the Palestinian rights movement with the movement for Black rights in the US. The second movement we focus on today is visibility of the Palestinian rights movement on US campuses today, in particular the development of the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) movement which has initiated immense pushback from Zionist campus groups, the well-funded Jewish Lobby, and too often, their university administrations and Boards of Trustees. These have given enormous visibility to the Palestinian cause which for so long has been suppressed. (Archive from 6-27-2021.)
