| John Object is the alias of Timur Dzhafarov from Kyiv. Of all the Ukrainian musicians we have profiled here, his story stands out, because he has taken the time to write about his life as a musician-turned-soldier. Instead of posting large amounts of his writing here, we'll provide his Twitter feed (twitter.com/john_object) so you can read his story. | Shortly after the war began, Timur gathered as much of his early music and remixes that he could find and published a 58-song album entitled "Life". This covers his musical experimentation from age 14 through 24. While it may not be great music, he wanted to leave a legacy in case he wasn't around in the future to do so. He managed to pull together the album in one day, so he could join the Ukrainian Defense Forces the following day. | His English is excellent, and he is sometimes asked to translate the manuals for new high-tech weapons that arrive from Europe or North America. His stories on Twitter can be sad, or funny. For example, he spends a lot of his military pay on modular synths and has them shipped to his mother's apartment. She sometimes mistakes the gear for high-tech military equipment! Investing in new electronic music equipment shows his optimism on both surviving and winning the war, so he can make new music when it's over. |
