Pretend-neutral news media have done crucial work in selling Islamophobia, in weaponizing centuries of misinformation and demonization for wartime purposes, with the war being the undefined, unending “war on terror.” Media’s job has involved lying to us about many things—but, crucially, about what we believed, what we were capable of, and what we wanted to see as the way forward. Key to that campaign has been the idea that Muslims are the enemy—violent, dangerous, irrational—if not now, soon; if not your friend, his friend. September 11, 2001, is the exemplar of a past that isn’t dead, or even past, and for no one more particularly than Muslims. ...

This is the second part of a program on the epic struggle over dams, displaced people, and the environment. Maria recorded it for TUC Radio in 2006. But just as she was preparing this program, devastating news came in from Libya. The subtropical cyclone “Daniel” hit eastern Libya yesterday and floods from heavy rains overtopped the reservoirs of two dams south of the city of Derna. Both dams were destroyed, and the floods swept entire neighborhoods with people, houses, and bridges into the Mediterranean. International Rivers Network's 2023 website, irn.org, lists 217 dam projects around the world that they have helped delay or stop. Globally the building of mega dam-projects is slowing down but the world is left with dams and reservoirs that are decaying and becoming a danger to people downstream.

We are in the midst of a labor upsurge. One with the promise of delivering not only better wages, and working conditions, but the prospects of wider positive social change. There is a new fighting spirit in the land, expressed by this rise in labor militancy. We can look back five years ago to the beginning of the upsurge in teacher militancy in red states such as West Virginia, Kentucky, Wyoming, and Arizona, where teachers struck, often illegally, to better not only their situation, but that of the communities they lived in. This upsurge has continued. Recently, we have seen the great success of the Amazon warehouse workers in Staten Island ... The captains of finance and industry run and control the Democratic Party. They made sure that Bernie Sanders did not get the nomination in 2016 and 2020. The leadership of the labor movement most often supports the Democratic party, explaining that they are the lesser of two evils. ...
