Elite outlets, for example The New York Times, are not a place to look for a serious understanding of fast-moving but deeply rooted events in Puerto Rico, where massive popular protests have just led to the resignation of Gov. Ricardo Rossello. Professor Morales teaches at Columbia University; he co-directed the documentary, Whose Barrio?, and he’s author of the forthcoming, Fantasy Island: Colonialism, Exploitation and the Betrayal of Puerto Rico. Plus Janine Jackson takes a quick look at “Trump Supporters Support Trump” stories. (Inadvertently repeated from last week.)

Host Kenneth Dowst The "Seven Sisters" and the Oil of the Middle East, part 1 (#385)
New World Notes: both a blog and a weekly radio program at WWUH, Hartford, CT (a trusted TJR source) Available at NWN's website newworldnotes.blogspot.com 2013
The "Seven Sisters" was Big Oil. It was the cartel of huge private oil corporations that ended up owning almost all the oil in the Middle East. They stole and kept this treasure by hook and by crook, in violation of many laws, with help from corrupt monarchs abroad and muscle from the U.S. government, armed forces, and CIA. Includes the story of how BP came to own all of the oil in Iran--and how, in 1953, Iran's parliament tried to regain control of the country's oil--and how the United States government responded by overthrowing Iran's democratic government and installing the Shah as dictator of Iran. (We then gave Iran's oil to US-based oil companies, not back to BP.) Adapted from a video documentary. Part 1 of a 2-part series originally released in May-June 2013.

She was only 65 when she died in May, 2019, and this program is a tribute to her life and work. It’s no wonder that McConnell is so well-liked among the New York elites his party so often castigates. McConnell helped lead the charge to slash taxes on corporations, saving big banks billions. He also led the effort to roll back parts of the Dodd-Frank law, which was enacted after the 2008 financial crisis.

Her fans boast that writer Susan Abulhawa is "right up there with Charles Dickens." Today we feature her keynote address at a recent conference sponsored by the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs. She speaks about Israel's dominant culture of violence, as illustrated by one of its biggest businesses, making and selling weapons and drones to brutal oppressors worldwide. In its sales pitch, it claims they are "battle tested," even though the main "enemies" they are tested on are unarmed Palestinian civilians and their homes and businesses. Her research revealed that in terms of weapon and drone sales per capita, Israel is the world champion by a large margin. [Replay from 4-7-2019.]

Scientists have issued a new warning that greenhouse gas emissions from thawing permafrost in the North could be twice what we thought, as the world warms. Scientist Merritt Turetsky is lead author of the article in the journal Nature “Permafrost collapse is accelerating carbon release“, published April 30, 2019. There are large areas which contain a lot of frozen water with the frozen soil. ... When vegetation rots below water, the powerful greenhouse gas methane (~30 times CO2) rises up into the atmosphere. About one-quarter of the land in the Northern Hemisphere is currently frozen.
