Ever wonder what the Ukrainian club scene is like in wartime? You could enjoy numerous live music venues in the large cities until the pandemic struck. During 2020 and much of 2021, live shows were streamed online. The streaming continued when the war began. Sometimes musicians performed at the same rock venues and dives that their listeners knew well, only the clubs were empty and these performances were streamed so that fans could watch from their home, basement or bomb shelter.
Once the initial attacks on Kyiv subsided, clubs began to reopen for live music. We found that the webzine NEFORMAT is a great resource to find news of upcoming concerts in Ukraine. We just checked the concert posters on their events page (https://www.neformat.com.ua/events.html) and discovered that psychedelic band Atomic Simao is performing in Kyiv on. Oct. 20. Fantastic!
Tonight's program begins at 1:00 AM with a song by Atomic Simao, Chemical Time Machine. https://atomicsimao.bandcamp.com/ |

The bot selected Morwan as the featured artist on tonight's program. The song airs at 2:03 AM.
We profiled him in many other episodes of this show. He left Irpen, a suburb of Kyiv, after it was attacked early in the war. He ended up in Berlin, with nothing but a laptop and personal items in his backpack, leaving behind his studio equipment in Irpen. Fans sent him money for new equipment, and he is touring Europe a bit now. Here's a photo from a recent concert in Leipzig, Germany.

Tonight we feature the music of Oleg Puzan, who releases music under the names Dronny Darko and Line Spectrum. At 1:20 AM, we play the ambient piece Theme 4 is from his June 2022 release, "10 Years of Dronny Darko". Last night, the bot's assistant selected music by Oleg's wife Sasha Puzan, and decided to follow up with Oleg's music tonight.
The Puzans exemplify the experience of the Ukrainian family during wartime. Sasha and their young son left Ukraine shortly after the war began, while Oleg stayed behind in Kyiv. We don't know what Oleg is doing to support the defense of his country, but will follow up when we learn more.
Many artists continue to create music, perform live, and even tour at this time. There is support for culture and the arts from the Ukraine government, especially during this war. While the invaders appear to be trying to stomp out Ukrainian culture and replace it with theirs, saving Ukrainian culture and making new art is clearly part of defending one's country. Some artists keep creating, promoting Ukrainian culture worldwide and raising funds for their country. Other musicians dropped everything to join the Ukrainian army. We love sharing all their stories here, while playing their music on WZBC.

The bot selected "Вылезай" by rap duo таквотжеоні for our daily Ukrainian song, playing at 4:09 AM. Released on a DIY label out of Kyiv, it's refreshing to see artists who do not always feel compelled to provide song titles or lyrics in English. "Вылезай" means "get out", according to one translation app. Later song titles are in English, perhaps because they realized that people outside of Ukraine are now interested in their music.
Without any knowledge of the language, one can still hear the rhyming in the vocals. Вылезай was released on February 10, 2022. The duo continued to release music in recent months. таквотжеоні's comments are in quotes below.
Released May 14: Psycho Trauma
"A sense of humor and out-of-the-box thinking is the main weapon of 🇺🇦nation!"
Released May 20: Tyranteens
"This work is part of the old material and it is finally ready to see the world. It seems to us that all tyrants and dictators are, deep down, teenagers with unrealized ambitions and a constant feeling of frustration, of course this state of affairs prevents all normal people from living and developing." (translated from Ukrainian)
Released May 28: Dances Macabre

Tonight we congratulate Yuriy Popov on his new album "A Spot", released two days ago. Yuriy releases wonderful ambient music under the name 58918012. He's in the city of Ivano Frankivsk, a relatively "safe" part of Ukraine at this time.
We asked the bot if we could throw a record release party for Yuriy during the bot's radio program, but it seems we have no algorithm for that. So we'll settle for a song from the new album during the first hour.
Here's what Yuriy says about his new album:
Hello, my friends! I am not sure if I am able to say it this way, but I am happy to represent to you one more album written during this terrible and bloody war of russia against Ukraine. I am always trying to put my feeling and inner states into my music. So, this album is also kinda diary of some period of time. It's uncompromisingly dark and even a bit aggressive (as for ambient music, of course). I hope you will dig this mood and decode some of my demons. Enjoy the music and stand with Ukraine! Peace <3
Here's a March 2022 interview with Yuriy: https://www.fluid-radio.co.uk/2022/03/interview-with-yurii-popov-aka-58918012-noteaf Yuriy blogs about music at the website Faeton Music, which he founded. |

Tonight at 1:38 AM, we feature the Krautrock band Sherpa the Tiger from Kyiv. Their song Peninsula is from their first album, Great Vowel Shift. The description of this album states, "With an arsenal of cheap, decrepit Soviet synthesisers, the four-piece combine a love of minimalist ambient music and the kosmische grooves that came pumping out of Eastern Europe in the 60s/70s."
On their facebook page, the band writes about their new release, recorded just before the war began:
Here we are.
We bet you know what to do with this
Please also share it & send us your thoughts.
The key thing we want to say – all the profit from this album we donate to Defenders of Ukraine.
