Rachel Anne Goodman was bit by the folk bug growing up in Canyon, California surrounded by the burgeoning music scene of Berkeley and environs. Singing was always her passion. When she “grew up” she hosted folk/bluegrass radio shows on public radio stations around the U.S. where she interviewed many of her musical heroes. From Jean Ritchie to Mike Seeger to Etta Baker, these musical giants had a big impact on her singing and playing. Her songwriting is steeped in the folk eras of the 60’s, 70’s, and 30’s, drawing from a sense of the land, of history and of lives lived in place.
In the 80’s,Ms. Goodman produced radio documentaries for Appalshop, a media center in the coalfields of eastern Kentucky. She was grateful to meet and play with many great traditional singers on their front porches and at old-time festivals and learn their repertoire of old songs. She is the producer of radio documentaries such as Southern Songbirds: The Women of Early Country and Old Time Music, The Boomtown Chronicles, and Pastures of Plenty, a History of California Farmworkers. She has a Peabody award for her work on The DNA Files for NPR.
Currently, Rachel sings and plays Celtic and folk music with her husband, Steve Coulter, Boss Tim and the Laylows, The Dooners and with Steve Palazzo. She has taught singing workshops at Redwood Music Camp, Lark in the Morning, Sweet’s Mill and Puget Sound Guitar Workshop. She teaches journalism at Cabrillo College in Aptos.
